deliveries UNITED STATES US Secretary Antony J. Blinken warned that Moscow’s actions put the
world at risk by ‘sending a message to aggressors everywhere’ UNITED STATES By S Vijay Kumar I International Editor I BENTONVILLE, Ark., Aug. 20, 2022 I
“We are way ahead of our targets that we have established for ourselves in year
one,” Harsit Patel, vice president and general manager of GoLocal.
The retailer is commercializing its delivery platform, beginning with delivery as a
service, helping businesses of all sizes bring their products closer to their
customers’ doorsteps.
Walmart GoLocal is poised to be a top white-label delivery service provider and
furthers the retailer’s strategy to build alternative revenue streams and profit
pools.
Walmart’s last-mile delivery service business, Walmart GoLocal, has topped 1 million
deliveries in its first year, the retailer today revealed. The company offered a brief update
on the state of its newer delivery business during its Q2 earnings call , where it noted that
GoLocal had been growing its support of local merchants’ delivery operations and was
also now on track to reach 5,000 pickup locations by the end of the year. To stay
competitive in the rapid delivery sector, GoLocal will continue to go after category
leaders, particularly in the verticals in which it has already carved out a strong client base
for, according to Harsit Patel, vice president and general manager of GoLocal. This will
help the service build delivery route density and allow it to reduce per-shipment costs.
“In an era where customers have come to expect speed and reliability, it’s more
important than ever for businesses to work with a service provider that understands a
merchant’s needs,” said John Furner, president and CEO, Walmart U.S. “Walmart has
spent years building and scaling commerce capabilities that support our network of
more than 4,700 stores and we look forward to helping other businesses have access to
the same reliable, quality and low-cost services.”
Announced in August 2021, GoLocal is Walmart’s attempt to leverage its own delivery
platform to service the needs of other merchants, both large and small. Merchants can
use the service for a variety of deliveries, including scheduled and unscheduled deliveries,
and even same-day. The service itself is powered by those Walmart had developed for its
own delivery needs, including its in-house Express Delivery service, which promises
delivery in two hours or less. GoLocal deliveries, however, aren’t handled by Walmart’s
own staff but rather gig workers sourced through Walmart’s Spark Driver program , the
same program that supports Walmart’s same-day delivery operations. Over time, the
retail giant aims to grow GoLocal into a larger business as more merchants shift to e-
commerce. It’s also one of multiple initiatives underway designed to help Walmart
generate additional revenue by meeting the needs of other retailers. Last year, for
instance, Walmart announced it would sell its own e-commerce technologies to other
retailers.
“We continue to sign up larger-scale customers, and we’re making strides on the bigger
unlock, which are small and medium-sized businesses,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon ,
speaking about GoLocal’s growth. Earnings per share were $1.77 versus $1.62 expected.
Net income also grew to $5.15 billion, up from $4.28 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Walmart GoLocal is built on the retailer’s proven ability to execute delivery capabilities at
scale with efficiency. In just three years, Walmart launched and scaled delivery and
Express delivery for its customers on 160,000+ items from more than 3,000 stores,
reaching nearly 70% of the U.S. population and growing using its existing delivery
network, including drones, autonomous vehicles and market fulfillment centers. By S Vijay Kumar I International Editor I 22nd September 2022 I
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken told the UN Security Council that the world risked disaster if it failed to
protect the international order by reacting sharply to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Blinken slammed the “atrocities
being committed in Ukraine by Russian forces,” noting that despite the divisions among countries at the UN, there
had been “remarkable unity” regarding the war in Ukraine. He said that leaders from around the world had spoken
about the need to end the war in Ukraine and to reaffirm the UN’s principles, namely “sovereignty and territorial
integrity.”
But despite this unity and opposition to the violence, Blinken said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had
“doubled-down, choosing not to end the war but expand it.”He added that Putin had chosen “not to pull troops
back, but to call 3,000 additional troops up, not to ease tensions, but to escalate them through the threat of nuclear
weapons.”Blinken said that Putin’s escalatory actions during the UN General Assembly exposed his “utter contempt
for the UN charter, to the General Assembly, and to this council.”He continued: “The very international order that we
have gathered here to uphold is being shredded before our eyes.“We cannot, we will not, allow President Putin to
get away with it.”
He warned that failing to defend territorial integrity in Ukraine would put “every country in the world at risk” by
“sending a message to aggressors everywhere,” which would “open the door to a less peaceful, less secure
world.”Ahead of this morning’s debate on the sidelines of the 77th UN General Assembly, Irish Foreign Minister
Simon Coveney said that it would be “arguably the most significant Security Council meeting of our time,” referring
to Dublin’s period as a non-permanent member of the council. He added: “I think it will be a very abrasive meeting."
That forecasted abrasiveness was delivered sharply by Blinken, who moved on to describe atrocities in Ukraine that
had been reported to him and some that he had witnessed while visiting the war-torn country.Blinken’s statement
was anticipated to be staunchly critical of Russian actions in Ukraine, and he confronted his Russian counterpart,
Sergey Lavrov, by detailing a shocking range of allegations of war crimes, torture, mass graves, and severe beatings
conducted by Russian forces.Blinken called on countries that have yet to speak out in strong terms against these
alleged crimes by Russian forces.
However, despite the firm nature of his demands of other countries on the council and those attending the UNGA
proceedings this week, Blinken is reportedly not expecting the UNSC to act effectively against Moscow due to
Russia’s power to veto as a permanent member on the council. An official, speaking on condition of anonymity,
earlier told that despite this block to action, Blinken’s speech is being delivered in order to urge other UNSC
members to pressure Moscow about the global damage that the war is causing, demanding that it ends.
Opening the council’s meeting, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that “the world may run out of
food” if urgent measures are not successfully taken to support various humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. He praised
deals struck with Ukraine and Russia, such as the Black Sea Grain Initiative and the “Memorandum of
Understanding with the Russian Federation on the full access of Russian food and fertilizer products, including
ammonia, to global markets,” but added that the situation was still severe.

China’s Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi followed Blinken and said that Beijing had sent humanitarian aid to
Ukraine, urging the international community to “de-escalate and create conditions for political settlement.”He said
that the “international community needs to support the UN in creating neutrality” in the crisis, urging stakeholders
to “contain spillovers” from the conflict.Yi supported calls for investigations into rights abuses in Ukraine, but
reaffirmed that they must be “objective and fair, based on facts rather than an assumption of guilt” and “must not
be politicized.”On the energy and food crises sparked by the conflict, the Chinese representative said that “energy
suppliers and consumers should work together to keep the global energy market stable.”He added: “We support
the secretary-general in helping facilitate the exports of Russian and Ukrainian grains.”The Chinese representative
added that it had “put forth the international food security cooperation initiative” to ensure the developing
countries do not “pay the price” of the food crisis caused by the conflict.
Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, criticized “spurious” attempts to promote an idea of “Russian
aggression.”Lavrov opened his address by attacking the “neo-Nazis” and other extremists in Ukraine who had
enjoyed the “direct support of Western countries” since 2014. He said that “ethnic Russians are being subject to
intolerance” in some Ukrainian regions, warning that “anti-Russian feelings” were no longer being hidden by
Ukrainian officials. Lavrov, who did not address the energy or food crises concerns raised by other speakers at the
security council, continued to outline alleged rights abuses suffered by Russian or Russia-supporting forces and
citizens in the eastern Ukrainian regions of Luhansk and Donetsk. Lavrov added that Moscow had “no confidence”
in the UNSC and other international fora, outlining how the “special military operation” was“inevitable.”
British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly followed Lavrov, slamming Putin and the Russian administration for its
invasion of Ukraine. He said the Ukrainian spirit had “continued to inspire” people around the world, adding that UN
agencies had noted more than 14,000 civilian casualties in the country since the invasions. Cleverly returned the
conversation to “mounting evidence of Russian atrocities against civilians,” including “indiscriminate shelling” and
“horrific acts of sexual violence.”Lamenting the “grizzly discoveries” of torture, Cleverly also slammed the food and
energy crises sparked by the conflict, attacking Putin’s government for attempting to escape responsibility for the
changes to the food market.

After two years of Democratic control of both the House and the
Senate, the power dynamic in Washington will now shift ,
Republicans won control of the U.S. House , returning the party to
power in Washington and giving conservatives leverage to blunt
President Joe Biden’s agenda and spur a flurry of investigations. But
a threadbare majority will pose immediate challenges for GOP
leaders and complicate the party’s ability to govern.
Nevertheless, the party finally won its crucial 218th seat in the lower
chamber of Congress, wresting away control from the Democrats
and setting the stage for a showdown with Joe Biden in the next two
years of his presidency. The Democrats did manage to keep control of
the Senate after a key victory in the state of Nevada. Control of the
House is crucial as it will allow the Republicans to launch an array of
congressional investigations into issues ranging from Biden’s
botched withdrawal from Afghanistan to more obviously politicised
probes of government actions during the Covid pandemic. The
Republican run House is likely to be a raucous affair as its predicted
slim majority means it will take only a few rebels to stymie any
legislation – in effect handing great
power to almost every Republican member of the House. With the
Republican right full of fringe figures, including Georgia’s Marjorie
Taylor Greene, that could be a recipe for chaos and the promotion of
extremist beliefs and measures.
From the Pacific coast to the eastern seaboard, election denialism
has seeped from US state capitols into village halls, bars and living
rooms sickening the US body politic and threatening democracy
itself. Biden and his party had gone into election day largely
expecting to get a thumping from an electorate angry at high
inflation that has wrought misery for millions of Americans struggling
with bills and spiraling prices. Republicans had doubled down on that
by running campaigns that stoked fears of violent crime and
portrayed Democrats as far-left politicians out of touch with voters’
concerns.
But the Democrats fought back, pointing out the extremist nature of
many Republican politicians, especially a cadre of far-right figures
backed by Donald Trump, and warning of the threat to US
democracy they represented. They were also boosted by the
backlash from the loss of federal abortion rights, taken away by a
conservative dominated supreme court. Republicans will now take
control of key committees, giving them the ability to shape
legislation and launch probes of Mr Biden, his family and his
administration. There is particular interest in investigating the
overseas business dealings of the president's son, Hunter Biden.
Some of the most conservative lawmakers have raised the prospect
of impeaching Mr Biden, though that will be much harder for the
party to accomplish with a tight majority.
Mr Biden congratulated House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy on
the party's win and said he was ready towork with them "to deliver
results for working families".

Minister at the forefront of the ceremonies that celebrated the fulfillment of a

Janmabhoomi Temple was marked by ceremonial grandeur. Dressed in a resplendent
golden kurta, cream dhoti, and patka, he exhibited a blend of traditional attire,
symbolizing the reverence attached to the occasion. Holding a silver umbrella on a folded
red dupatta, the Prime Minister's attire reflected the ceremonial solemnity and cultural
significance of the event. Upon entering the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, Prime
Minister Modi took 'sankalp' for the consecration ceremony.
This ritual, which involves a sacred resolve or commitment, signifies the leader's
dedication to the sanctity of the moment and the divine proceedings within the temple.
The unveiling of the idol of Ram Lalla by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a moment of

The Prime Minister acknowledged the collective efforts that contributed to the

birthplace of Lord Ram, became the epicenter of a cultural and spiritual renaissance as
the construction of the Ram Mandir took shape. The consecration ceremony, known as
Pran Pratishtha, symbolizes the divine infusion of life into the deity, a momentous event
eagerly anticipated by millions across the country. Ayodhya, situated on the banks of the
sacred Sarayu River, has been a symbol of cultural and religious heritage for centuries.
The town holds immense significance in Hindu mythology as the birthplace of Lord Ram,
one of the revered incarnations of Lord Vishnu. The historical journey of Ayodhya has
been marred by disputes over the Ram Janmabhoomi, the site believed to be the
birthplace of Lord Ram, which led to legal battles and socio-political discourse. The legal
dispute reached its pinnacle in 2019 when the Supreme Court of India delivered a
landmark judgment, ruling in favor of the construction of the Ram Mandir at the
disputed site.

The verdict paved the way for the realization of a collective dream, allowing the
construction of a grand temple dedicated to Lord Ram, the embodiment of virtue, justice,
and righteousness. As part of the day's proceedings, Prime Minister Modi visited Kuber
Tila, a sacred site associated with Lord Ram's reign. This visit symbolized a connection
with the historical and spiritual roots of Ayodhya, underlining the cultural richness and
heritage embedded in the town. Acknowledging the dedication and hard work of those
involved in the construction of the temple, Prime Minister Modi interacted with the
workers. This gesture exemplified the recognition of their contribution to the realization
of a vision that goes beyond bricks and mortar, embodying the aspirations of a nation.
The unveiling of the Ram Lalla idol and the consecration ceremony hold profound
implications at both national and international levels. The event signifies the reclamation
of a cultural heritage site and the reaffirmation of India's commitment to preserving its
rich tapestry of traditions. It also resonates globally, capturing the attention of those who
appreciate the significance of cultural diversity and the peaceful coexistence of religious
beliefs.

The historic unveiling of the Ram Lalla idol at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in
Ayodhya marks the culmination of a transformative journey that has spanned decades.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at the forefront of this momentous occasion, has not only
led the nation in witnessing the fulfillment of a collective dream but has also conveyed a
message of unity, cultural richness, and spiritual resurgence. The Ram Mandir stands as a
symbol of India's unwavering commitment to its cultural heritage and the values
embodied by Lord Ram. The consecration ceremony, steeped in tradition and spirituality,
serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come. As Ayodhya
resonates with the echoes of this historic event, it reaffirms the cultural mosaic of India,
where diversity is celebrated, and spirituality is embraced as a unifying force.

Russia and China remain strained Mastercard brings new value to SMB Cardholders with new and
expanded benefits UNITED STATES VATICAN CITY By S Vijay Kumar I International Editor I 1st September 2023
Pope Francis embarked on a historic journey to Mongolia on Friday
morning, aimed at uplifting one of the globe's tiniest and freshest
Catholic communities. This marks the inaugural visit by a pope to the
landlocked Asian nation and unfolds amidst renewed tensions
between the Vatican and Mongolia's formidable neighbors, Russia and
China. Francis touched down in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar
following an overnight flight traversing Chinese airspace, granting the
pontiff a rare opportunity to extend greetings to President Xi Jinping.
Vatican protocol mandates the pope to convey such salutations
whenever he traverses the airspace of a foreign nation.
In his message to Xi, Francis conveyed "warm regards and best wishes
to your excellency and the populace of China." "I offer my prayers for
the prosperity of the nation, invoking upon all divine blessings of
harmony and tranquility," Francis expressed. Addressing journalists en
route to Mongolia late Thursday, Francis expressed anticipation about
visiting a country with sparse population yet rich cultural tapestry, one
that demands sensory immersion for comprehension. "Though
sparsely populated, Mongolia boasts a rich culture," he remarked
aboard the ITA charter plane. "Exploring this vast, silent expanse offers
a unique understanding, one that transcends intellect and engages
the senses. Mongolia is a realm best grasped through sensory
experiences."
Scheduled events include official engagements with the Mongolian
president and prime minister, along with an address to Mongolian
government officials, cultural luminaries, and business magnates.
Subsequently, Francis is set to meet with bishops, priests, and nuns
constituting the nucleus of a modest Catholic congregation
comprising 1,450 individuals, established merely a generation ago.
While Christianity has left its imprint on the region for centuries, the
Catholic Church received official recognition in Mongolia only in 1992,
following the nation's liberation from its Soviet- aligned communist
regime and the enshrinement of religious freedom in its constitution.
Diplomatic ties between the Holy See and Mongolia have endured
since then, with a handful of missionary orders, including Mother
Teresa's Missionaries of Charity, fostering the fledgling community over
the past three decades.
Despite strains in the relationship, Chinese Foreign Ministry
spokesperson Wang Wenbin acknowledged the gesture as indicative
of "friendship and goodwill." "China remains committed to fostering
constructive dialogues with the Vatican, enhancing mutual
understanding, and bolstering trust to advance bilateral relations,"
Wang affirmed during a routine press briefing. Upon touchdown,
Francis, confined to a wheelchair, was greeted on the tarmac by
helmeted honor guards and Mongolia's foreign minister. He was
presented with dried yogurt by a woman clad in traditional attire,
symbolizing a gesture of hospitality. Francis, however, refrained from
making any public remarks. As he disembarked, he was observed by
several dozen onlookers, including priests and bystanders gathered
within the airport terminal.

WWW.BBNEWSIN.COM Indonesia is gearing up to host the G20 Summit 2022 in Bali this
November By S Vijay Kumar I International Editor I 21st August 2022 I
Indonesia will host the G20 Summit for the first time on the Bali Islands, one of the world’s most famous tourist
resorts, on November 15 and 16, 2022, as part of its presidency of the grouping. The theme of Indonesia’s G20
Presidency, which it assumed on December 2021, is “Recover Together, Recover Stronger.” INDONESIA The Group 20 (G20) is a strategic multilateral platform connecting the world’s major developed and emerging
economies: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, India, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico,
Russia, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the
European Union. Spain is a permanent guest at the G20. The members of the grouping account for more than 80
percent of global gross domestic product (GDP), 75 percent of global trade, and 60 percent of the population of
the planet.
The Indonesian government has been intensively preparing for the summit with the assumption that all G20
leaders such as Vladimir Putin of Russia, Joe Biden of the US, Anthony Albanese of Australia, and King Salman
of Saudi Arabia will join the Bali Summit in person. The preparations have covered security matters, logistics,
transportation, accommodation, infrastructure development, and other facilities, including the media center and
emergency medical response for delegates, among others. So far, the preparations have been on the right track,
according to Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi. "In the logistics and the substantial aspects, we are ready. I
also believe that our preparation progress is on the right track," she told the press after reporting on the progress
of preparations to President Joko Widodo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.
Ukraine’s top envoy in Jakarta said it was crucial for Russia’s invasion of his country to be part of discussions
among the G20 nations, and that the economic effects of the conflict had global implications, as Indonesia
convenes the grouping’s meetings this year. Beijing’s readout on a phone call between Chinese President Xi
Jinping and his Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo meanwhile said the Chinese leader backed Jakarta’s plans
for the G20 summit and its focus on global economic recovery.
Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to attend a G20 summit in Indonesia, Russia's ambassador to
Indonesia said dismissing suggestions by some G20 members that Russia could be barred from the group. The
United States and its Western allies are assessing whether Russia should remain within the Group of Twenty
major economies following its invasion of Ukraine, sources involved in the disscussions have revealed. But any
bid to exclude Russia would likely be vetoed by others in the group, raising the prospect of some countries
instead skipping G20 meetings, the sources said.
Russia's ambassador to Indonesia, which currently holds the rotating G20 chair, said Putin intended to travel to
the Indonesian resort island of Bali for the G20 summit in November. "It will depend on many, many things,
including the COVID situation, that is getting better. So far, his intention is ... he wants to," ambassador Lyudmila
Vorobieva informed. Asked about suggestions Russia could be excluded from the G20, she said it is a forum to
discuss economic issues and not a crisis like Ukraine."Of course expulsion of Russia from this kind of forum will
not help these economic problems to be resolved. On the contrary, without Russia it would be difficult to do so.
The 2022 G20 is important for Indonesia since it is the first time the country is hosting the forum. In addition, it is
the first developing country to lead the grouping, which yields considerable influence on global economic and
social policies. Understanding the challenges and the need for collective action, Indonesia will focus on three
main pillars for its G20 2022 Presidency namely: Global Health Architecture, Digital Economy Transformation,
and Energy Transition as a comprehensive exit strategy to support global recovery. Besides establishing
equitable vaccination programs, Indonesia’s G20 Presidency is expected to successfully accelerate digitalization
and steer global policy coordination, particularly in terms of green financing. Through these pillars, Indonesia will
continue to take the lead on ensuring equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, promoting sustainable and
inclusive economic development through MSMEs participation and digital economy. Simultanouesly it will also
maintain the aspiration to continue to improve the collective capacity in securing the shared prosperity among
nations, through various reform efforts in global taxation, stronger cooperation in fighting corruption, deepening of
infrastructure financing, and pushing for a more democratic, and representative international cooperation. G20 leaders’ declaration ‘deplores in strongest terms’ Russia’s war By S Vijay Kumar I International Editor I 16th November 2022 I
The G20 Leaders’ Declaration, adopted at the summit in Bali ahead of the presidency of the grouping being
handed over to India, conceded differences within over the war in Ukraine while condemning the Russian
aggression. World's 20 largest economies speaks out in favour of ending the war while acknowledging internal
disagreements.
The 16-page joint statement, signed by "the majority of G20 leaders" , noted the severe economic damage
caused by the war, and described Russia's veiled threats to use nuclear weapons on Ukrainian soil as
"unacceptable". Eclipsed by the war, the declaration articulated concerns over its impact on the global economy
and the nuclear overhang. Russian President Vladimir Putin had given the summit a miss and his foreign minister
Sergey Lavrov who was leading Russia’s delegation left a day early. The declaration calls Russia the aggressor
with member countries iterating their national positions adopted in the UN Security Council and General
Assembly. It “deplores in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and
demands its complete and unconditional withdrawal from the territory of Ukraine”.
“Recognizing that the G20 is not the forum to resolve security issues, we acknowledge that security issues can
have significant consequences for the global economy.” The document was the first joint statement issued by the
G20 since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in late February. Russia is a member state of the
group. G20 leaders said international law must be upheld and that the threat of the use of nuclear weapons was
“inadmissible.”
The declaration says: “Most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and stressed it is causing
immense human suffering and exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economy constraining growth,
increasing inflation, disrupting supply chains, heightening energy and food insecurity, and elevating financial INDONESIA stability risks. There were other views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions. Recognising that
the G20 is not the forum to resolve security issues, we acknowledge that security issues can have significant
consequences for the global economy.”
Apart from India, the G20 countries that have refused to condemn Russia at various international for a include
China, Brazil and host Indonesia. The text of the declaration indicates that they stuck to their respective positions
during the negotiations on the document. Alluding to Putin raising the spectre of nuclear war, the declaration
asserts that “the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s
remarks to Putin at Samarkand on the margins of the SCO summit that “this is not the era of war’’ finds mention
in the declaration in the context of resolution of crises through diplomacy and dialogue, which has been India’s
stance in all conflict situations.
“The peaceful resolution of conflicts, efforts to address crises, as well as diplomacy and dialogue, are vital.
Today’s era must not be of war,” the declaration states. Western countries have quoted this remark of Modi
several times in recent weeks but Russia has accused the West of cherry-picking as the Prime Minister had just
a week before the SCO summit praised Putin’s vision and called for greater engagement of India in the Russian
far east.
The leaders dedicated some space to the state of the world economy, the usual topic of discussion that usually
forms the backbone of the annual G20 meetings. The war in Ukraine exacerbated the emerging global energy
and food crises, which in turn triggered record inflation in the United States and the eurozone. As a result, central
banks implemented drastic interest rate hikes that have significantly increased the risk of falling into recession.
As a result, leaders agreed to moderate these hikes.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo officially handed over the G20 presidency to India at the end of a summit in
Bali. President of host Indonesia, Joko Widodo, gave his “highest appreciation to all those who attended” the
summit, noting that their “flexibility” gave way for the declaration to be formally adopted. The G20, comprising 19
states and the EU, accounts for over 80 percent of the world’s gross domestic product, 75 percent of international
trade and 60 percent of its population. The group includes countries ranging from Brazil to Saudi Arabia.

deficit," stated Prime Minister Modi. "The ongoing war has further
exacerbated this trust deficit. But, just as we conquered COVID-19, we can
also overcome the trust deficit caused by the war," he added, refraining
from specifying any involved countries. As the G20 summit commences,
it is noteworthy that a significant number of G20 leaders are not in
attendance. The absence of leaders from Russia and China, among
others, reflects the current complexities in international relations,
particularly regarding the Ukraine conflict. The summit also faces
challenges stemming from disagreements over Ukraine, as preparatory
meetings leading up to the event have failed to yield agreements.
The G20 summit's agenda encompasses a wide range of topics crucial to
developing nations, including alternative energy sources like hydrogen,
resource efficiency, the establishment of a common framework for digital
public infrastructure, and food security. Additionally, discussions will
address the reform of development banks such as the World Bank and
International Monetary Fund to improve accessibility of funds for lower-
and middle-income countries seeking solutions to combat climate
change and other global challenges. The inclusion of the African Union as
a G20 member marks a significant stride towards a more balanced and
inclusive global dialogue. The G20 summit in India is expected to serve as
a platform for fruitful discussions on pressing global issues, all while
elevating the voices and concerns of developing nations. By S Vijay Kumar I International Editor I 14th December 2022 I

The Council presidency and European Parliament
representatives reached an agreement on the draft
regulation on visa free travel for holders of passports
issued by Kosovo. The agreed text now needs to be
approved by the Council and the European Parliament
before going through the formal adoption procedure. The
new rules would allow Kosovo passport holders to travel
to the EU without a visa for a period of stay of 90 days in
any 180-day period. This exemption from the visa
requirement would apply from the start date for the
operation of the European Travel Information and
Authorisation System (ETIAS) and in any case no later
than 1 January 2024.
More than 400 million EU citizens enjoy freedom of
movement in the Schengen area. They can travel, work
and live anywhere in the EU. Non-EU nationals living in
the EU or visiting the EU as tourists, exchange students or
for business purposes can also move freely. The EU
currently has a visa-free regime in place with 61 non-EU
countries, two special administrative regions of China
(Hong Kong and Macao) and one territorial authority that
is not recognised as a state by at least one EU member
state (Taiwan).
Kosovo has made significant progress in all blocks of the
visa liberalisation roadmap. On the basis of this
assessment, the Commission proposed to lift the visa
requirement for holders of passports issued by Kosovo.
The exemption from the visa requirement will ensure that
the whole Western Balkan region is under the same visa
regime. The Commission will continue to actively monitor
the implementation of these requirements, including visa
policy alignment, through the post-visa liberalisation
mechanism.

Today, the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) released a
groundbreaking Statement of Policy focusing on the pivotal role of
pharmacies in life-course vaccination.
In this policy statement, the FIP underscores the significance of adopting
a life-course approach to vaccination. It acknowledges that health
outcomes are influenced by a spectrum of life events, including
vaccinations tailored to benefit specific age and vulnerable groups.
According to Mr. Luís Lourenço, FIP Professional Secretary and co-chair of
the FIP Policy Committee, "A life-course immunisation approach
recognizes that health is shaped by a series of events that occur
throughout life, including vaccinations known to benefit specific age
groups and vulnerable groups."
The policy statement emphasizes the urgent need to expand vaccination
schedules and strategies to ensure accessibility to vaccines beyond
infancy. Mr. Lourenço highlighted the grave impact of vaccine-
preventable diseases on older populations, explaining, "Vaccine-
preventable diseases are a significant cause of morbidity, including the
loss of functional ability and increased mortality in older individuals due
to a gradual deterioration of the immune system brought on by age."
FIP advocates for the integration of pharmacists into immunization
pathways for older adults and other special-risk groups, including
individuals with long-term conditions, pregnant women, healthcare
professionals, underserved populations, and caregivers. Additionally, the
policy statement underscores the invaluable role of pharmacists in
fostering vaccine confidence and addressing vaccine hesitancy.
Mr. Lourenço emphasized, "One of the key levers for increasing
vaccination rates across all age groups is to enhance the convenience of
access, a goal that pharmacies are uniquely positioned to achieve." To
enable pharmacists to make substantial contributions to life-course
vaccination, the policy statement provides a set of comprehensive
recommendations for various stakeholders. These recommendations
include calls for governments and policymakers to eliminate regulatory
obstacles, allowing pharmacists to prescribe and administer all relevant
vaccines throughout a person's life-course. Furthermore, the policy
statement suggests that policymakers develop remuneration models to
support the delivery of sustainable life-course vaccination services by
pharmacies, both in the private and public sectors.

WWW.BBNEWSIN.COM EU's response to terrorism BELGIUM Climate change gets ‘highest priority’ in US, Pacific agreement UNITED STATES By S Vijay Kumar I Interna onal Editor I 14th December 2022
Pavel BlaĹľek, Czech Minister for Justice said Terrorists know
no borders, they build their networks, prepare and perpetrate
their attacks across EU member states. To be able to stop
them, our judicial authorities also need to have a cross- border
view. The new digital system agreed today will allow to better
cross-check information and make sure any links are detected,
no matter where in the EU a terrorist crime was committed.

Currently, member states share information with Eurojust on
cases related to terrorism via various channels. This
information is then included in the European judicial counter-
terrorism register, a technically outdated system that does not
allow for proper cross-checking of information. The proposal
aims to remedy these shortcomings and allow Eurojust to play
a stronger and more proactive role in supporting coordination
and cooperation between national authorities investigating
and prosecuting terrorist offences.Under the proposed rules,
member states will need to provide Eurojust with information
on any criminal investigations regarding terrorist offences as
soon as such cases are referred to the judicial authorities. By S Vijay Kumar I International Editor I 30th September 2022 I
The United States and Pacific island nations have signed up to a new era of cooperation, making
climate change the “highest priority” and promising to work together to ensure a peaceful region
where “democracy is allowed to flourish”. The Declaration on US-Pacific Partnership, signed by 14
Pacific island nations, came at the end of an unprecedented two-day summit in Washington, DC,
which took place five months after a security deal between the Solomon Islands and China raised
concern about Beijing’s growing influence in the region.
“A great deal of the history of our world is going to be written in the Indo-Pacific over the coming
years and decades,” U.S. President Joe Biden said at the start of a meeting with leaders and
representatives from 14 Pacific island states in Washington, adding that this is why his
administration is prioritizing a partnership with these countries. “The security of America, quite
frankly, and the world depends on your security and the security of the Pacific islands,” he told the
gathered leaders.
Biden delivered his remarks as his administration released its Pacific strategy, an outline of the
White House’s plan to support the region on pressing issues such as climate change, pandemic
response, economic recovery, maritime security, illegal fishing, drug trafficking and environmental
protection. These issues, the U.S. said, are exacerbated by the impact of heightened geopolitical
competition surrounding these countries. “Increasingly, those impacts include pressure and
economic coercion by the People’s Republic of China, which risks undermining the peace,
prosperity, and security of the region, and by extension, of the United States,” the White House said
in reference to Beijing’s activities in the region. Over the years, Beijing has significantly bolstered its
economic ties with the 14 sovereign Pacific island countries.
Although these nations have received less of China’s attention and resources than other parts of the
world, Beijing included the region in its key diplomatic and economic development policy — the Belt
and Road initiative — which suggests it has geostrategic interests in the area. Washington’s new
initiatives include over $810 million in additional and expanded programs, including more than $130
million in new investments to support climate resilience. This includes a previously announced 10-
year $600 million economic assistance agreement request to Congress associated with supporting
fisheries economic development.
In terms of defense and security, Washington said it is negotiating a new acquisition and cross-
servicing agreement with Fiji, and will soon begin talks with Papua New Guinea on a defense
cooperation deal. It is also aiming to provide $2.8 million for FBI-led law enforcement training and
over $3 million to enhance U.S. Coast Guard training and capacity-building for maritime security and
protection. The White House added that it hopes to successfully conclude negotiations for new
Compact of Free Association security agreements with the Federated States of Micronesia, the
Marshall Islands and Palau.
However, these nations have reportedly described the level of proposed U.S. economic assistance as
insufficient. And earlier this month, the Marshall Islands suspended talks to renew the security
partnership, citing the long-standing impact of U.S. nuclear testing in the area between 1946 and
1958. In a joint declaration issued by the U.S. and the Pacific island leaders, Washington committed
to addressing the Marshall Islands’ “ongoing environmental, public health and welfare concerns” and
to safely removing unexploded ordnance. The document also said Washington prioritizes “the
resolution of unresolved issues and the timely and successful completion of negotiations relating to
the Compacts of Free Association.”

In the 11-point declaration, Washington and the island nations said tackling the climate crisis was
“the highest priority of our partnership.” At the same time, the Pacific islands affirmed the
importance of freedom of navigation and overflight, saying that they “will oppose all efforts to
undermine the territorial integrity and sovereignty of any country, large or small,” in an apparent
message to China, which is embroiled in several territorial disputes in Asia. In terms of diplomacy, the
Biden administration said it would recognize the self-governing territories of Cook Islands and Niue
as sovereign states following “appropriate consultations,” in a move that would grant these island
access to U.S. funding while enabling Washington to increase its diplomatic presence in the region.
The summit marked the first time the U.S. has hosted so many leaders fro m a region that many feel
has been neglected by Washington in recent years.
The Biden administration’s new whole-of-government approach, which is meant to complement
the U.S. Indo- Pacific Strategy released earlier this year, is intended to prioritize these islands in
American foreign policy and align U.S. regional engagement with the goals, areas of focus and
principles of the Pacific Islands Forum’s (PIF’s) 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. “Along
with Australia’s ‘Pacific step-up,’ New Zealand’s ‘Pacific reset’ and the U.K.’s ‘Pacific uplift,’ the summit
was intended to show that Washington has recognized the need to drastically renovate relations
with the Pacific islands to respond to the more muscular influence of China in the region under
President Xi Jinping,” said Richard Herr, an expert on the Pacific islands at the University of Tasmania.

WWW.BBNEWSIN.COM EU Takes Stand Against Violence: Accession to Istanbul
Convention Signals Commitment to Protecting Women BELGIUM Biden vows to combat ‘venom and violence’ of white supremacy UNITED STATES By S Vijay Kumar I BB News International Editor I 2nd June 2023
The European Union has acceded to the Istanbul Convention, a
comprehensive legal framework aimed at protecting women from all
forms of violence. Through the adoption of two Council Decisions, the
EU as a whole will be bound by ambitious international standards.
President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized Europe's commitment to
protecting women and girls from violence, stating that justice and
equality are long overdue. The EU's accession will be finalized after the
Council Decisions are published in the Official Journal and the
instrument of accession is deposited with the Council of Europe. The
Istanbul Convention will come into effect for the European Union three
months after the deposit.
The Istanbul Convention is a powerful instrument that recognizes
violence against women as a violation of their human rights. It includes
measures to prevent violence, support victims, and prosecute
perpetrators. In addition to this accession, the Commission has taken
various initiatives to combat gender-based violence, including
proposing a directive criminalizing severe forms of violence across the
EU. The EU remains committed to preventing gender-based violence
through its Gender Equality Strategy, Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan,
and funding programs. Internationally, the EU actively participates in
initiatives like the Spotlight Initiative and the Call to Action on
Protection from Gender- Based Violence in Emergencies. By S Vijay Kumar I International Editor I 16th September 2022 I
US President Joe Biden has appealed for a united front against hate crimes
and political violence in a speech building on his bid to present himself as a
champion of moderate values at a time of rising extremism. Biden said
America had long experienced a "through line of hate" against minority
groups, one that had been given "too much oxygen" by politics and the media
in recent years. "We have to face the good, the bad and the truth. That's what
great nations do and we're a great nation," Biden told a packed hall at the
White House's United We Stand Summit on Thursday. "White supremacists
will not have the last word."
"You must choose to be a nation of hope, unity and optimism –– or a nation of
fear and division and hate," Biden added. Biden recounted, as often before,
how he took the decision to challenge then-president Donald Trump in the
2020 election after the Republican initially declined to condemn a 2017 neo-
Nazi march in Charlottesville, Virginia. "Charlottesville changed everything
because I believe our story is to unite as people in one nation, in one America."
Participants gave Biden a standing ovation when he said he wanted Congress
to "hold social media companies accountable for spreading hate." "I'm calling
on Congress to get rid of special immunity for social media companies and
impose much stronger transparency requirements on all of them," Biden said.
He said that a spate of racist violence –– including a deadly attack on a Black
church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015, a mass shooting targeting
Latinos in El Paso, Texas, in 2019, and another gun massacre, this time
targeting African Americans, in Buffalo, New York, in May –– had left the
country reeling."Many of you have lost part of your heart and soul," he told the
audience, which included a cross-section of civil rights activists, religious
leaders, academics and elected officials.
The White House described the day-long conference, with Biden giving the
keynote speech, as a chance to highlight "the corrosive effects of hate-fuelled
violence on our democracy and public safety." The summit comes just eight
weeks ahead of midterm elections in which Republicans are seeking to take
control of Congress. It also comes two weeks after Biden delivered a fiery
speech denouncing the "extreme ideology" of Trump, whose supporters
overran the Capitol to try to overturn the 2020 election and who continues to
promote far-right conspiracy theories. A White House official told reporters
that Thursday's event, which featured a panel with both Republican and
Democratic mayors, was not political and would "demonstrate that we can
unite across partisan lines."
However, Republicans have painted Biden as a divider for calling out Trump
supporters, noting that the former president remains hugely popular with the
party's voters.Biden defended himself in his White House speech, saying he
was right to speak up."There are those who say that when we bring this up we
divide the country," he said. But "silence is complicity."
Among some of the practical measures discussed at the conference was
Biden's suggestion that Congress should "get rid of special immunity for social
media companies and impose much strong transparency requirements on all
of them" regarding extremist content. The provision known as Section 230
shields platforms from liability for the content and has long been targeted by
some in Congress. Biden announced a $1 billion push by philanthropists to
build bridges among Americans of different backgrounds, and an initiative
supported by the foundations of former presidents Barack Obama, George W.
Bush, Bill Clinton and Gerald Ford.
