Storage of liquid hydrocarbon Prepared by: Vaibhavi Purani Roll no.:49
Outline Introduction Types of Tanks Safety Measures – Fire Prevention 2
Introduction Fires in petroleum product storage tanks are fortunately rare occurrences. However, when they do occur they require considerable resources both in manpower and equipments in order to extinguish it successfully. 3
Types of Tanks 4
Count… There are mainly three different types of tank for storing liquid hydrocarbon in large quantities. 1) Fixed roof tanks. (Cone roof) 2) Fixed roof tank with internal floating tank ( Floating Screen) 3) Open top floating roof tanks ( Simple Pontoon or Double Deck) 5
1) Fixed roof tanks: They are used for ‘Black’, heavy products( heavier than jet/kerosene/gasoline/diesel) such as fuel oils, atmospheric or vacuum residue and asphalt(bitumen). Hence, accessories such as steam/oil coil heating and insulations are fitted to it. 6
2) Fixed roof tank with internal floating tank: These tanks are mainly dedicated to products capable of emitting large quantities of vapour at ambient conditions such as crude oil, diesel, gasoline. Internal floaters increases the fire hazard hence geodesic domes are used for decreasing the probability of unwanted ignition. 7
3) Open top floating roof tank: In these design, as the roof is floating directly at top of liquid, the formation of mixture of air/hydrocarbon vapour is prevented which could occur in fixed roof tanks. 8
