Safety Week from 13 th to 18 th October 2025 “Empower. Educate. Prevent.”
Ground Handling Excellence Safety Week
13 th O ctober 2025 Kick-off Message: Reinforcing that every employee is a safety leader. The critical impact of Foreign Object Debris (FOD). Definition & Impact: What constitutes FOD? (Loose tools, ramp debris, luggage tags, screws). FOD Zones & Protocols: Strict protocols for gates, taxiways, and storage areas. Human Factors Integration: Discussing "Normalization of Deviation"— driving past FOD because "it's not my job." We must actively stop this behaviour. Practical: Immediate FOD Walk (Ramp Sweep) to apply training.
Consequences of FOD
Critical Proximity R ules and High-risk Z ones. Ramp Markings Refresher: Identifying hold lines, restricted movement areas, and parking protocols (Classroom Review & On-Ramp Quiz). "Red Zones" Explained: The three high-risk areas during an aircraft pushback/tow (Wing-tip, Engine Intake/Exhaust, and Nose Gear areas). Practical Drill: Turnaround Walk-through: Chocks In to Pushback: Step-by-step review. Communication is Key: Emphasizing standardized hand signals and clear radio communication between Wing Walkers and Tug Operators. End of Day Action: Immediate feedback on FOD Walk results and team rewards.
14 th October 2025 Detailed Pre-use Inspection (PUI) best practices. The PUI Mandate: Why the mandatory checklist is not optional. It catches failures before they cause an accident. PUI Deep Dive: Hands-on workshop focusing on critical checks: Brakes and Steering system integrity. Safety interlocks and cut-offs (Belt Loaders, Passenger Stairs). Identifying and reporting fluid leaks (Hydraulics, Oil). Practical: Teams audit pre-staged GSE (including units with intentional minor faults ) to develop critical observation skills.
Daily Inspection Checklist
Airside Driving & Collision Avoidance Rules of the Road: Reviewing right-of-way protocols and the strict adherence to designated speed limits (especially near fuel pits and passenger movement areas). Jet Blast Hazard: Understanding and respecting engine thrust hazard zones. Practical Drill: Blind Spot Demonstration: Using a large GSE unit (e.g., Cargo Loader) to demonstrate actual blind spots. Practice "Go/No-Go" Spotter Procedures for safe reversing and manoeuvring near aircraft. Human Factors: Discuss how distraction (e.g., mobile phones) immediately eliminates situational awareness.
15 th October 2025 Protecting the Body: Load, Lift, and Live Safely Daily Safety Huddle & Warm-up: Mandatory 5-minute huddle led by a Ramp officer before flight. Safe Lifting Techniques: Training on optimal posture (squat/hinge), using the "Power Zone," and when to use team lifting for heavy or awkward items. The Mechanical Advantage: Always use mechanical aids (belt loaders, dollies, lifts) when available—do not risk injury due to rush. Practical Session: Hands-on practice in a designated baggage handling area.
Baggage Handling
Proper PPE use and ergonomics in aircraft holds
16 th October 2025 High-Risk Scenarios: Prevention and Immediate Action Dangerous Goods (Hazardous Materials): Identifying prohibited items (batteries, certain chemicals). Mandatory skill: Reading and understanding ICAO/IATA Diamond Labels . Proper notification procedures for undeclared items (Case Study Review). Practical Drill: Corrosive Spillage: Simulation of a minor spill (using water). Training on immediate actions, containment kit deployment, and precise communication procedures.
Dangerous Goods Identification
17 th October 2025 Passenger with Reduced Mobility: Practical Drill: PRM Transfer Simulation Passenger handling and Greeting: 5 security questions and presence of reference manuals In-Shift Briefings: Emphasizing on PAX convenience and ease of access Queue Management and Boarding as per defined zones Meticulous follow-up of MHB and DPR
Passenger Handling
18 th October 2025 Managing the Human Element The Swiss Cheese Model: Understanding how human factors (fatigue, stress) line up with system failures to cause incidents. Fatigue Recognition: Recognizing the signs of impairment in yourself and colleagues. The "Say No" Policy: Emphasizing the non-punitive right and responsibility to say "No" to a task if you are feeling unfit (fatigued, ill, or under high stress). Deliverable: Hand-outs on sleep hygiene and shift work management.
Swiss Cheese Model
Non-Punitive Hazard Reporting Near Miss Reporting is GOLD: Every near-miss is a free lesson. We must learn from "what almost happened" before it becomes an accident. Reporting System Demo: Walk-through of the company's anonymous reporting app/platform. Psychological Safety: A clear message from leadership that honest reporting is never punished—it is rewarded as a sign of safety leadership.
Hazard Reporting
Closing Ceremony and Commitment Awards, Recognition, and Future Safety Vision Recognition & Awards: Safety Champions of the Week. Cleanest Ramp Sector Award. Winners of the FOD Walk, Equipment Audit, and Photo Contest. Winner of Best Demonstration Winner of Safety Exhibition Winner for most reported Hazards in the week The Safety Pledge: All staff sign a commitment banner as a visible pledge to the culture of safety. Final Message: An inspirational, forward-looking message from leadership. Event: Group Photo and celebratory lunch/snacks. Next Steps: Review of the Safety Culture Survey findings to drive continuous improvement.
