Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999

Geographical Indications A geographical indication  ( GI ) is a name or sign used on products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin (e.g., a town or region).   Geographical indications certify that a product has specific qualities, adheres to traditional methods, or holds a favorable reputation based on its origin.

This  is a compilation of Geographical Indication Tags (GI Tags) in India, arranged state-wise.

Conclusion Protection for G.I.s is best provided under national laws because it is not the provisions of the treaty but the actual national laws that provide protection in relation to G.I.s .   The G.I. tag is an essential component for creating and maintaining abstracts and originality of the product of certain essentials and characteristics. India is not far behind in legally pursuing this aspect of intellectual property
