SANGATH IS THE OFFICE BUILDING OF THE WORLD FAMOUS ARCHITECT AND THE 2018 PRITZKER PRIZE WINNER, AR.B. V. DOSHI.
SANGATH IS THE COLLABORATION OF THE IDEAS AND PHILOSOPHY OF ARCHITECTURE OF THE ARCHITECT BALAKRISHNA V. DOSHI.

1. AN EMBLEM OF DOSHI PHILOSOPHY SAGAR PANCHAL

INTRODUCTION LOCATION :THALTEJ ROAD, AHEMDABAD ARCHITECT :BV.DOSHI SITE AREA :2346 SQ M TOTAL BUILT UP AREA :584SQ M PERIOD OF CONSTRUCTION :1979-1981 SANGATH means “moving together with participation”. SANGATH is an Architects office which is supported by passive solar ventilation technique. The design concerns of climate ( temprature , humidity, air flow etc.). And the use of special material made the building cost effective and fiesable for passive design.

3. CLIMATE HOT AND DRY In ahemdabad,the summer temperature reaches 45 degree celcius and the heat is very intense.It is the heat rather than the breeze that becomes critical Natural comfort can be achieved by protecting spaces from the heat and glare of sun

DESIGN CONCEPT ANF FEATURES Design concerns of climate ( temperature,humidiy,strength ) Extensive use of vault Main studio partly below the ground(sunken) The building is raised on a plinth and burried in the ground Very less use of mechanical instrument Special materials are used resulting in a low cost building costing it Lot of vegetation and water bodies Continuity of spaces Use of lot of difuse sunlight Complete passive design

SITE PLAN This structure is closely integrated With outdoor spaces The west and the south facade is Shaded by dense trees Wind flows from west and south West side so as to create a central open Space through which the wind can Flow unobstructed The site is quadrangle looking South over a road Extensive use of vaults. Grassy steps used as informal amphitheater. Use lot of diffused light. Lot of vegetation and water bodies.

MATERIALS SANGATH was constructed with Hollow clay tiles embeded in the wall The outer skin is covered with Tiles fragmented pieces of waste Material from the manufacturer The hollow interior spaces Are isolated by clay within the structure The suns heat is reduced and reflected by the white mosaics that cover the each vault The facades are covered with tiles or cement and plaster The vaults are primary architectural features made of sandwich layer of ferro cement and ceramic fuses.

7. VENTILATION STACK VENTILATION Ventilating window at upper volume releases the accumulated hot air through pressure difference Doshi use this traditional technique not only to reduce the heat inside the building but also as an important element of the methodology in the use of waste material.

8. PERFORMANCE The building measures have ensured excellent climate contol in terms of keeping the inside cool and increasing the time-lag for heat transfer. There is a difference of about 8 degree celcious between the interior and exterior roof skin tempratures . The time lag of transfer is nearly 6 hours. The natural elements are harmoniously blended with built environment, and waste material refuse have ensured cost economy as well as environmental consiousness .
