Fun Facts Most, if not all, of Sappho’s poems were about homosexuality and romantic love between woman. It is said that Sappho had been married to a Kerkylas of Andros, but considering how she was a outspoken homosexual, this is likely a rumor that could’ve been started by Sappho herself. Sappho’s work was criticized and was sometimes written down in history as from the perspective of a man or was mistranslated to be about a man, even though the original text was not. Part of the reason that Sappho lived the life she did is because she lived in Lesbos, and not Athens or Sparta, as Lesbos held a higher regard for women then the rest of Greece.
