Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2
(SARS-CoV-2) is the virus responsible for the ongoing
coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. It is a
novel coronavirus that was first identified in December
2019 in Wuhan, China. SARS-CoV-2 belongs to the
family of coronaviruses, which also includes other
viruses such as SARS-CoV (the virus that caused the
2002-2003 SARS outbreak) and MERS-CoV (the virus
that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome).
VIROLOGY
SARS-CoV-2 primarily spreads through
respiratory droplets when an infected
person coughs, sneezes, or talks. It can also
spread by touching surfaces contaminated
with the virus and then touching the face,
particularly the eyes, nose, or mouth.
SPREAD
COVID-19, the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, can
range from mild symptoms to severe illness and even
death, particularly in older adults and those with
underlying health conditions. Common symptoms include
fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle or
body aches, loss of taste or smell, sore throat,
congestion, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe
cases, COVID-19 can lead to pneumonia, acute
respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), organ failure, and
other complications.
CONCLUSION
RESULT
Efforts to control the spread of
SARS-CoV-2 include vaccination
campaigns, non-pharmaceutical
interventions such as wearing
masks, practicing physical
distancing, hand hygiene, testing,
contact tracing, and quarantine
measures.
