APPLICATION OF GEO-SPATIAL TECHNOLOGY FOR THE ANALYSIS OF RELIEF aspects of the SAPTLINGI BASIN DR. SARDAR PATIL Devrukh Shikshan Prasarak Mandal's Nya . Tatyasaheb Athalye Arts, Ved . S.R. Overview Morphometric analysis of a watershed provides a quantitative description of the drainage system ( Strahler ) The future progress of society and sustainable development require a very good and detailed knowledge of the physical environment The study of physical aspects of the earth surface is the core of the spatial science ( Singh, Savindra , 1998 ), like Geography.

Overview The development in the field of Geo-Spatial Technology ( GST ) The relief aspects of the drainage basins are related to the study of three-dimensional feature of the basin morphometry The study of relief aspects of drainage morphometry is most useful in watershed management and for the micro level planning.

THE STUDY REGION

Objectives The main objective of the present research work is to use the Geo-Spatial technology for the analysis of the Relief aspects of the Basin Morphometry in the study region. However, the specific objectives are as given below. To analyze the Hypsometry of the Saptlingi Basin. To find out the clinographic pattern of the study region. To study gradient of the study region. To explain the relative relief of the study region.

Methods of data collection Primary data The Advanced Space-borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Global Digital Elevation Model ( GDEM ) remotely sensed data GARMIN'S Oregon 550 GPS

Methods of Data Analysis Geo-referenced in Arc GIS 9.3 Watershed generation tool-Global Mapper Generate Contours Tool- Global Mapper Spatial Analyst Tool-Hydrology tool Clinographic analysis in Global Mapper DEM

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The relief aspect includes the analysis of the relation between area and altitude It also include clinographic analysis, analysis of average ground slope, relative reliefs, relief ratio, dissection index, profile of terrains and the rivers etc. M ost useful in the Integrated Watershed Management ( IWM ) and sustainable development

HYPSOMETRIC ANALYSIS HI = Mean Elevation- Minimum Elevation Maximum Elevation- Minimum Elevation Based on above equation the Hypsometry Index of the study region is 0.5.

CLINOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS Clinographic curves represent average slopes between successive contours and thus present panoramic view of the terrain .

SLOPE

Relative Reliefs Relative relief = Maximum relief Basin perimeter The study reveals that the relative relief ratio of the study region is 5.63.

CONCLUSION The study reveals that the Hypsometry Index of the study region is 0.5. In the western part of the study region the slope angle is less than 40 degree where as in the eastern part it is more than 50 degree at most of the sites. The relative relief ratio of the study region is 5.63 .
