A collaborative research & design project between students of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). The project focused on transforming the current state of the SCAD Jen Library. This presentation documents the development and delivery of design ideas that came out of the midterm research findings. The content was generated over a 5 week period. This presentation was presented to the client for the final design report.

immediate short-term design solutions Minerva is a third year fibers major at SCAD,
who is graduating in 2021 and says she loves
SCAD Collaboratory. She works there at least one
to two times a week.
Her latest group project is working on a new
apparel design, which focuses on sustainable
material and limited manufacturing.

Minerva watches a live-stream feed
from the Milan Fashion Week being
shown in the windows.
2020
Today, Minerva is going to meet her project team at the SCAD Collaboratory. They are searching for fresh
inspiration to help jump-start their assignment.
immediate short-term design solutions The interactive entry wall
greets Minerva by name and
notifies her that her group is
already working in Space 23.
2020
Walking through the
lobby, the RFID scan-
ner registers her ID in
her pocket.
immediate design solutions While she waits the short few minutes for robot retrieval of her books,
she sees there is a special event Friday at the Rooftop Planetarium. short-term
2020
At the Virtual Browse kiosk, Minerva searches for interesting books about her project, finding three to be retrieved from the book storage vault.
immediate short-term design solutions 2020
With books in hand, Minerva walks to the Collaboration Workzone.
As Minerva approaches Space 23, she can already see what her
group is up to via the OLED walls around the space.
immediate short-term design solutions Completing their initial research, the group
begins to sketch, with the table automatically
switching to light box mode for easier tracing.
2020
Minerva enters and
places her books on
the table, triggering
the digital table
to virtually display
content from the
books on the walls
allowing the group to
follow along with her.
immediate short-term design solutions Minerva felt the meeting was
a successful collaboration, but
she needs a breather, so she
decides to head to the rooftop.
She takes a leisurely stroll
through the garden and grabs
a refreshing green tea from the
rooftop cafe.
2020
immediate short-term design solutions As the woven fabric is dunked into vats of indigo dye,
key details about the materials and dye are shown
to the side, and Minerva detects the scent of indigo
wafting through the room
.
2020
Feeling rejuvenated, she goes to the Discovery Center to research
fabrics that will help develop
her project. She finds a video on
aboriginal dying techniques.
After finding the video she sends
it to the display wall to play.
As the video is playing it takes
Minerva into the tribal villages of
Africa and shows her the original
methods of making fabrics.
immediate short-term design solutions While in the Discovery Center, Minerva goes
to one of the learning stations with tools
for practicing native basket-weaving. After
trying the techniques herself she is motivated
to learn more and sign-up for a dyeing class
on native techniques.
2020
Minerva selects a panel of additional
information about dyeing and sees related
projects by other students that used similar
materials and techniques.
One project seems particularly relevant and
she sends an invitation to the student to
collaborate with her team on this project.
immediate short-term design solutions Minerva pauses at the
exquisite handmade books
before moving on to look
at the fashion plates. She
finds one that inspires
several ideas for her
project and she decides
it’s time to head home to
sketch before her group
meets again tomorrow.
Satisfied with her research progress, Minerva wants to look at the new fashion plates in Special Collections. As Minerva walks into
the Special Collections lobby she checks in her bag at the front
desk and steps into the gallery ready for the latest amazements.
2020
design solutions As she gets ready to leave,
Minerva walks past the
Alumni Success display
in the hall. A recent
graduate’s work featured
in Vogue’s September
issue is on display and
Minerva looks forward to
the day that’s her work in
the showcase.
On her way out of the
Collab, the RFID scanner
identifies the books in her
bag and automatically
updates the system, while
the display wall wishes
her luck on her project.
Back at her place, Minerva reflects on
all that she’s learned, and accomplished
in her day at the SCAD Collaboratory.
She wonders what she’ll find tomorrow
when she heads back for another day
of inspiration.immediate short-term
