SCALP : NERVE SUPPLY & BLOOD SUPPLY. Presented by : Poulani Roy. ‹#›

NERVE SUPPLY OF SCALP The scalp and temple are supplied by ten nerves on each side. Out of these five nerves(4 sensory and 1 motor) enter the scalp in front of the auricle. The remaining five nerves (4 sensory and 1 motor) enter the scalp behind the auricle. ‹#›

NERVE SUPPLY OF SCALP • In front of auricle – Supratrochlear n. – Supraorbital n. – Zygomaticotemporal n. – Temporal branch of facial n. – Auriculotemporal n. • Behind auricle – Greater auricular n – Post. Auricular branch of facial n – Lesser occipital n. – Greater occipital n. – Third occipital n. ‹#›

NERVE SUPPLY OF SCALP ‹#›

NERVE SUPPLY OF SCALP The innervation of scalp can be remembered using the mnemonic "Z-GLASS" for Z =Zygomaticotemporal nerve , G=Greater occipital nerve , L=Lesser occipital nerve , A=Auriculotemporal nerve , S=Supratrochlear nerve , and S=Supraorbital nerve . ‹#›

NERVE SUPPLY OF SCALP The scalp receives cutaneous innervation from branches of the trigeminal nerve or the cervical nerve roots. Trigeminal Nerve Supratrochlear nerve – branch of the ophthalmic nerve which supplies the anteromedial forehead. Supraorbital nerve – branch of the ophthalmic nerve which supplies a large portion of the scalp between the anterolateral forehead and the vertex. Zygomaticotemporal nerve – branch of the maxillary nerve, this supplies the temple. Auriculotemporal nerve – branch of the mandibular nerve which supplies skin anterior superior to the auricle. ‹#›

NERVE SUPPLY OF SCALP Cervical Nerves Lesser occipital nerve – derived from the anterior ramus (division) of C2 and supplies the skin posterior to the ear Greater occipital nerve – derived from the posterior ramus (division) of C2 and supplies the skin of the occipital region. Great auricular nerve – derived from the anterior rami of C2 and C3 and supplies the skin posterior to the ear and over the angle of the mandible. Third occipital nerve – derived from the posterior ramus of C3 and supplies the skin of the inferior occipital region. ‹#›

BLOOD SUPPLY OF SCALP • Arteries – Supratrochlear – Supraorbital – Superficial temporal – Posterior auricular artery – Occipital artery • Veins -follows the artery ‹#›

ARTERIAL SUPPLY OF SCALP ‹#›

BLOOD SUPPLY OF SCALP Arteries supplying the scalp are branches of either the external carotid artery or the ophthalmic artery, which is a branch of the internal carotid artery. Branches from the ophthalmic artery ( internal carotid ) • The supratrochlear and supraorbital arteries supply the anterior and superior aspects of the scalp. They branch from the ophthalmic artery while it is in the orbit, continue through the orbit, and exit onto the forehead in association with the supratrochlear and supraorbital nerves. Like the nerves, the arteries ascend across the forehead to supply the scalp as far posteriorly as the vertex of the head. ‹#›

BLOOD SUPPLY OF SCALP Branches from the external carotid artery Three branches of the external carotid artery supply the largest part of the scalp- the superficial temporal, posterior auricular, and occipital arteries supply the lateral and posterior aspects of the scalp • the posterior auricular artery : leaves the posterior aspect of the external carotid artery , supply an area of the scalp posterior to the ear. • occipital artery, which ascends in a posterior direction, supply a large part of the posterior aspect of the scalp. • The superficial temporal artery, a terminal branch of the external carotid artery that passes superiorly, just anterior to the ear, divides into anterior and posterior branches, and supplies almost the entire lateral aspect of the scalp. ‹#›
