Daily Task:Relate hot spot with plate tectonics. Topic : HOTSPOT

Identify In which plates boundaries does the following landforms occur Rift Valley Mid-ocean ridge

San Andreas Fault Himalayas

Andes Mountains

Locate the Hawaiian Islands. Is the island along the boundary? Where it is situated? If it is not along the boundaries, what causes the formation of this chain of volcanic islands?

Essential Question: How were the Hawaiian islands created in relation to plate tectonics ? Perform Activity No. 6 Drop It Like It’s “Hot Spot”, Refer to LM pages 31-32.

Key Questions: • What can you see on the surface of the bond paper? • Let’s say that the paper represents the Earth’s crust; what do you think is represented by the water in the test tube ? • What geologic feature do you think will be formed at the surface of the crust? • Which of the features, at the surface of the crust, will be the oldest? the youngest? Label these on your paper. • Which of the features will be the most active?   The least active? Label these on your paper.

Key Questions: • Are all tectonic activities happening only along the boundaries? What made you say so? • What is a hot spot? • How are the Hawaiian volcanoes different than those in the “Ring of Fire?”   How do the volcanoes in Hawaii contribute to the island’s land and biodiversity?

Prepare and present an emergency kit for the whole family that they can use during or after a disaster . Rubrics at LM page 33.
