THE CORAL REEF ECOSYSTEM
THE CORAL REEF ECOSYSTEM The coral reef ecosystem is an interactive area of coral reef development containing many individual reefs and associate habitats.
CORAL REEFS Coral reefs are part of the Marine Biome and sometimes called “Rainforest of the Sea”. They are built by millions of animals called CORAL POLYPS. The Coral Polyps live in Colony or groups.
The Corals
FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO REEF FORMATION Coral Reefs are built with exoskeletons of Corals composed of Calcium Carbonate or Lime that accumulates in large quantities.
Coralline algae are important contributors to coral reef formation by depositing limestone sheets over the surface of the reefs.
ABIOTIC FACTORS Sea floor depth profile Substrate composition Water movement Light penetration Salinity of water
CATEGORIES OF CORAL REEFS FRINGING REEFS
FRINGING REEFS hug the shore and continents or islands.
CATEGORIES OF CORAL REEFS BARRIER REEFS
BARRIER REEFS stand between the open sea and a lagoon. The Great Barrier Reef which stretches nearly 2000 km off the Northeast Coast of Australia is the largest coral reef system.
CATEGORIES OF CORAL REEFS ATOLL REEFS
ATOLL – are coral reefs enclosing a lagoon.
INTERACTIONS IN MARINE ECOSYSTEM PREDATION - occurs between big and small fishes. COMPETITION - occurs when two or more organisms compete for resources like food and space.
COMPETITION
PREDATION
COMMENSALISM
INTERACTIONS IN MARINE ECOSYSTEM MUTUALISM - occurs between a clownfish and the sea anemone. PARASITISM- occurs in worms living inside a fish. COMMENSALISM- occur between barnacles and whales or turtles.
THE TUBBATAHA REEF SYSTEM The largest Coral Reef in the Philippines
IMPORTANCE OF CORAL REEFS Coral reefs are natural habitat for many sea animals. Coral reefs are breeding grounds of fishes and other forms of marine life.
IMPORTANCE OF CORAL REEFS Coral reefs provide rich sources of marine foods. Coral reefs are tourist attraction. Coral reefs protect coastlines from strong waves and water current.
