About This Presentation

Science 7 Solutions ppt discussion

Slide Content

Here is where your presentation begins SOLUTIONS 7TH GRADE

Learning targets I can define solutions. I can identify forms of solutions. I can identify components of solutions.

HOMO OR HETERO? HETERO HOMO HETERO

HETERO HETERO HOMO

It is a mixture of a solvent and a solute. What is a solution? A solution is a mixture of two or more substances.

FORMS OF SOLUTION AQUEOUS SOLUTION NON-AQUEOUS SOLUTION

When a solute is dissolved in water, the solution is called an aqueous solution. AQUEOUS SOLUTION

When a solute is dissolved in a solvent other than water, it is called a non-aqueous solution.  NON-AQUEOUS SOLUTION

COMPONENTS OF SOLUTIONS What is the difference between a solute and a solvent?

SOLVENT A solvent is a substance that dissolves another substance, also known as the dissolving agent. It dissolves the solute.

What is the universal solvent?

UNIVERSAL SOLVENT Water can dissolve solutes more than any other liquid, so it is called the universal solvent.

SOLUTE A solute is a substance dissolved in another substance. It is dissolved in a solvent.

SOLUTES

Two types of solute SOLUBLE INSOLUBLE water-loving solute (can be dissolved in water) water-fearing solute (cannot be dissolved in water)

examples SOLUBLE INSOLUBLE sugar, salt, coffee, milk, powder sand, paper, oil, rubber, wood

Types of solutions TYPE SOLUTE SOLVENT EXAMPLE SOLID GAS SOLID Hydrogen in palladium LIQUID SOLID Liquid Mercury in solid sodium SOLID SOLID Bronze (tin in copper)

Types of solutions TYPE SOLUTE SOLVENT EXAMPLE SOLID GAS SOLID Hydrogen in palladium LIQUID SOLID Liquid Mercury in solid sodium SOLID SOLID Bronze (tin in copper)

Many solids are solid solutions. Solid solutions are often called alloys , like in brass (copper and zinc).

Types of solutions TYPE SOLUTE SOLVENT EXAMPLE LIQUID GAS LIQUID Hydrochloric acid(HCL gas in water) LIQUID LIQUID Wine (ethyl alcohol in water) SOLID LIQUID Sodium hydroxide pellets in water

Types of solutions TYPE SOLUTE SOLVENT EXAMPLE GAS GAS GAS Air (oxygen and CO 2 in nitrogen LIQUID GAS Moisture-laden air SOLID GAS Naphthalene sublimed in air

Here is where your presentation begins SOLUBILITY 7TH GRADE

Learning targets I can define solubility. I can enumerate and explain factors affecting solubility. I can explain factors that affect dissolution.

Preliminary activity: Solvent vs. Solute Instructions: Identify the solute and the solvent in the ff: Taku mixed some water and juice crystals to make a fruit drink. The solute is juice crystals b. The solvent is water

2. Kim swished salt water in her mouth after she lost her tooth in a soccer game. a. The solute is salt b. The solvent is water

3. Rosanna put rubbing alcohol on the grass stain that was on her sock. a. The solute is grass stain b. The solvent is rubbing alcohol

4. Justin added a little sugar to his tea because it tasted bitter. a. The solute is sugar b. The solvent is tea

5. The tea from Mei's tea bag colored the water as it brewed. a. The solute is tea b. The solvent is water

WHAT IS SOLUBILITY? Solubility is defined as the maximum amount of solute that dissolves in a given amount of solvent at a given temperature.

Describing Solubility Very soluble Moderately soluble Slightly soluble Insoluble

IT HAS TWO TYPES: - liquids capable of mixing and forming a solution -do not mix to form a solution or insoluble IMMISCIBLE MISCIBLE

EXAMPLES MISCIBLE IMMISCIBLE ETHYL ALCOHOL AND WATER OIL AND WATER

WHAT ARE THE FACTORS AFFECTING SOLUBILITY? Nature of Solute and Solvent Effect of Temperature Effect of Pressure

Nature of Solute and Solvent Different materials exhibits different solubilities. “LIKE DISSOLVES LIKE”

POLAR SUBSTANCES Water Ammonia Ethyl

NONPOLAR SUBSTANCES

Effect of Temperature Hot Coffee Iced Coffee

Effect of Temperature Solubility Temperature SOLID SOLUTES Solubility increases when temperature is increased.

Effect of Temperature Solubility Temperature GAS SOLUTES Solubility decreases when temperature increases.

Example: Gas escapes from the soft drinks

Effect of Pressure Small changes in pressure have little effect on the solubility of solids in liquids or of liquids in liquids but have a marked effect on the solubility of gases in liquids.

Effect of Pressure Solubility Pressure GAS SOLUTES Solubility increases when pressure is increased.

What are factors that affect the rate of solution?

Factors That Affect The Rate Of Solution The rate of solution is a measure of how fast a substance dissolves. Small particles dissolve more readily than larger ones. 1. Size of the particles

1. Size of the particles

Factors That Affect The Rate Of Solution With liquid and solid solutes, stirring allows the solute to dissolve faster. 2. Agitation or stirring

Factors That Affect The Rate Of Solution Increasing temperature speeds up dissolution. 3. Increase in temperature

Factors That Affect The Rate Of Solution -the rate decreases as the concentration of the solution increases 4. Concentration of the Solution

Wine (ethyl alcohol in water)

Bronze (tin in copper)

HCL gas in water

Sodium hydroxide pellets in water

Naphthalene sublimed in air

Moisture-laden air

Hydrogen in palladium

Air (oxygen and CO 2 in nitrogen

Liquid Mercury in solid sodium
