LEARNING COMPETENCY: In this lesson, you will learn how to differentiate between heat and temperature at the molecular level. Specifically, you will learn to: ✓ Compare the movement of particles in varying temperatures. ✓ Relate the kinetic energy (KE) of particles to temperature. ✓ Differentiate heat and temperature.
Learning Activity #1 A hot boiled egg was served with you. You want to eat it right away so you scooped the egg with a spoon and put it in water. A few minutes later, you notice that the water turns warm and the egg becomes a little colder. Why is this so?
Put a check ( ) if the statement is correct, and ( ) if the statement is wrong. The water absorbs heat from the boiled egg. The temperature of the egg makes the water cold. The heat escapes from the environment . The heat transfers from an object of higher temperature to an object of lower temperature.
Learning Activity #2 HOT TAP COLD Glass A Glass B Glass C What do you think will happen to the chocolate drink as it is added in each cup? Why?
The chocolate powder will dissolve fastest in cold water and slowest in hot water . The chocolate powder will dissolve fastest in hot water and slowest in cold water. The chocolate powder in the 3 cups of water will dissolve at the same time. Joseph Rose Alex
The idea of Alex that the chocolate powder will dissolve fastest in hot water and slowest in cold water. Because the higher the temperature the faster the movement of particles thus chocolate powder will be dissolved fastest in hot water.
(a) The particles in a hot object move faster than the particles in the colder object. (b) When the two objects are in contact, fast-moving molecules collide with slow-moving molecules causing the slow-moving molecules to speed up and the fast-moving one to slow down .
(c) Heat flows from hotter to colder object causing the particles in the hot object to slow down and the particles in the colder object to speed up. The molecules move at the same speed, a state of thermal equilibrium.
How are HEAT , TEMPERATURE and KINETIC ENERGY related? If heat is added to an object, the particles of the object gain kinetic energy and they move faster. Since temperature is directly related to kinetic energy, any gain in kinetic energy would cause the temperature to increase.
How are HEAT , TEMPERATURE and KINETIC ENERGY related? Conversely, if heat is transferred or removed from an object, it loses kinetic energy, its particles move slower and body’s temperature decreases.
What is the difference between HEAT and TEMPERATURE?
HEAT TEMPERATURE THERMAL ENERGY What is it? The transfer of energy between objects that are of different temperatures. A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance. The total kinetic energy of the particles in a substance. How is it expressed? Energy transferred in joules and calories. Degrees Fahrenheit, Celsius, Kelvin. Joules. Affected by object’s mass? Varies with mass, specific heat capacity, and temperature change Does not vary with the mass of an object. Varies with mass and temperature.
ELABORATE Joshua attended a birthday party. He saw someone preparing a juice. He observed that the powdered juice is dissolved in water. He added ice after the juice is completely dissolved in the water. Why is it better to dissolve first the juice in the water before adding ice on it?
