Respiratory System Difference between Respiration and Breathing Respiration – the process wherein food is broken down in the cells with the help of oxygen to release energy. Breathing – physical process of inhalation and exhalation wherein oxygen is obtained and carbon dioxide is expelled.
Respiration involves four processes; Breathing: Respiratory gasses are obtained and expelled through inhalation and exhalation. External Respiration: Gas exchange occurs between the alveoli of the lungs and blood. Transport of respiratory gases: The blood transports the oxygen from the alveoli to the cells, and carbon dioxide is transported from the cells to the alveoli. Internal respiration: Gas exchange occurs between the blood and cells.
Human Respiratory System Upper Respiratory Tract Nasal Cavity - lies above the bone that forms the roof of the mouth and curves down at the back to join the throat. -Holes in your nose called nostrils/nares Vestibule Region – is lined with mucus that traps microorganisms and other debris in the inhaled air. Cilia – tiny hair-like structures that traps dust. 2. Respiratory Region – warms the inhaled air so that its temperature comes close to normal body temperature(37c). It moisten the air.
The last region is where the olfaction happens. It is composed of highly sensitive cells which send the stimulus(smell) to the brain and aid in determining the smell. Pharynx – also known as the throat. Nasopharynx - is found behind the nasal cavity. Oropharynx – is behind the oral cavity. Laryngopharynx – located near the larynx.
Larynx Also known as the voice box . Opens when a person when breathing. When speaking larynx is closed to cause vibration that produces sounds.
