Monsoon A monsoon is a continuous change in the direction of the prevailing winds. A prevailing wind is the wind that blows at a particular direction. Philippines experience two direct monsoons – northeast and southwest monsoons
Northeast Monsoon( Hanging Amihan ) The Northeast monsoon is a seasonal wind that blows from October to March. However, its effect are felt during the months of November to February. The Northeast monsoon gives us the coldest temperature during the year.
Northeast Monsoon( Hanging Amihan ) During winter in the northern hemisphere, the Asiatic mainland is cooler than the surrounding bodies of water. As a result, cold air masses sink and produce high pressure area. The wind in the high pressure area moves in clockwise direction. Then it blows out of the area from the northeast direction towards the Philippines.
Northeast Monsoon( Hanging Amihan ) A northeast monsoon passes over the ocean, it gathers moisture. The collected moisture falls as rain on the eastern part of the country. It gives much rain over the eastern coast of the Philippines than the western part, mountain ranges block the wind. This is why the monsoon that reaches the western part is already dry and cold.
Southwest Monsoon( Hanging Habagat ) During summer in the northern hemisphere, the Asiatic mainland becomes warmer than the surrounding bodies of water. As a result, warm air rises and low pressure are develops over the southern portion of Asia. This wind is warm and humid. The wind reaches the Philippines from the southwest direction.
Southwest Monsoon( Hanging Habagat ) Southwest monsoon largely comes from the oceans. So, it is moist and warm and brings large amount of rainfall to the Philippines.
Southwest Monsoon( Hanging Habagat ) It can trigger more rains when it is suck by tropical depressions. The tropical depression located in low pressure areas can intensify the monsoon wind. This result in heavier and longer periods of monsoon. The country experiences this seasonal wind from May to October.
