Quick — say aloud what color you see in every word, NOT the word you read. Go from left to right, from top to down. Ready. Set. Go!
STAR BURST thru JOT – PAIR - SHARE 1. Think of what you already know about the topic at the center of the star. 2. Write them down at the points of the star. 3. After 2 minutes, share it with a partner and then to the group. Brainstorm with the group and come up with the common answers. 4. Write them on the bigger diagram of the star and present it to the whole class. How can we separate mixtures?
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS How can we separate mixtures of solids? What are the different techniques we can use ? 2. Why do we need to separate mixtures?
Some techniques in separating mixtures of solids. Picking –only useful when the particles are large enough to be seen clearly.
2. Sifting/ Sieving – use to separate a dry mixture which contains substances of different sizes by passing it through a sieve.
3. Using a magnet – use to separate magnetically susceptible material from non – magnetic material.
Some techniques in separating mixtures of solids. 3. Using a magnet – use to separate magnetically susceptible material from non – magnetic material.
4. Filtration – this is a bit more sophisticated than manual picking out stuff. The most common technique to remove the solid material. 5. Decantation- is a process for the separation of mixtures , by removing the top layer of liquid from which precipitate has settled.
6. Evaporation- this is where the thermally stable substances is heated till dry to obtain the crystals. 7. Freezing or Cooling- When a mixture of oil and water is placed inside a refrigerator , the oil will solidify first. The water will remain liquid for a longer period of time. . It is because the oil has a higher freezing point.
Do these: MIXTURES SCAVENGER HUNT Identify mixture/s of solids that can be found in your surroundings. For each mixture presented, identify whether it is heterogeneous or homogenous. List the components of the mixture and any of its physical properties that may assist you in separation. Then, suggest a method that you could be used to separate the mixture based on the properties you have identified. Be sure to record all the materials needed to conduct your experiment and provide an explanation on how the experiment could be conducted. 6. Finally, tell your reason why you need to separate the mixture/s.
Name of solids mixture Heterogeneous or Homogeneous Components Physical properties Possible separation Techniques Materials needed for separation Experimental design Reason for separating Record all your ideas in the table provided.

Independent Practice:
What are the different ways of separating mixtures of solids? 2. How do we choose the best way of separating mixtures?
Mix nails stones. How could you quickly separate the nails from the stones? After the members of the family ate different kinds of fruits, you gathered the seeds. You mixed them in a basin. Later on, your mother instructed you to separate each kind of seed. How will you separate each kind of seed? Think about these:
You accidentally mixed salt with coffee powder. Can you separate salt from coffee? Why or why not? Your sister happened to mix iodized salt with white sugar. Can she still separate the two? Why or why not?
Which of the following mixtures can be separated by sieving? Gravel and sand Flour and sugar Coconut milk and water Milk and sugar 2. What technique in separating mixtures is used in separating pebbles from the sand using a wire screen? Picking Sieving Filtering Using a magnet
3. If you were given a mixture of sulphur and iron filings, how will you separate the two kinds of components? a. Use of a water heater b .Use a magnet c. Use a Bunsen burner d. Either a or b
4. Joel works in a construction site. Why is sifting sand important? Fine particles of sand is needed in forming a mixture of cement. Coarse particles are needed in forming a mixture of cement. Mixture of sand particles is needed in forming cement. No particles is needed in forming cement.
5 . What is the use of an electromagnetic crane in a junk shop? a.To separate metals from non metals. b.To separate mixture of fine and coarse particles. c. To separate dry from wet materials: d. To separate solid from liquid.
Research Task: Carry out research on some of the industries and occupations which include the separation of mixtures. Report your findings in a simple table as shown below. Industrial Process Way(s ) of Separation Involved Purpose of the separation Occupation ( s ) involved Ex. Construction site sifting To separate sand to mix with cement Construction worker
