Atoms, Elements, and Compounds: Understanding the Basics
In science, it is important to know about atoms, elements, and
compounds. These three terms are related but mean different
things. Atoms
An atom is the smallest unit of matter. Everything around us is
made of atoms. You can think of an atom like a tiny building
block. Atoms are so small that we cannot see them with our
eyes. Each atom has a center called the nucleus, which
contains particles called protons and neutrons. Surrounding
the nucleus are even smaller particles called electrons.
Example: A hydrogen atom is a simple atom. It has one proton
and one electron. It is the smallest and lightest atom.
Elements
An element is a substance that is made up of only one type of
atom. Elements are the basic materials of everything in the
universe. Each element has a unique name and a symbol.
There are many elements, and they are listed in the periodic
table.
Example: Oxygen is an element that is essential for life. It has
the symbol "O." When you breathe in, you take in oxygen from
the air.
Compounds
A compound is a substance that is made up of two or more
different types of atoms that are chemically combined. This
means that the atoms chemcially join together in a specific
way to form a new substance. Compounds have different
properties than the elements that make them up.
Example: Water is a compound made of two hydrogen atoms
and one oxygen atom. Its chemical formula is H₂O. Even
though it contains hydrogen and oxygen, water has different
properties than these elements.
Summary
To sum up:
•Atoms are the smallest building blocks of matter.
•Elements are pure substances made of only one type of
atom.
•Compounds are made of two or more different types of
atoms that are chemically joined together.

2. An _______ is a pure substance that consists of only one kind of atom.
3. When two or more _________ atoms chemically join together, they form a
compound.
4. The periodic table lists all known _________ and their symbols.
5. water is a compound made from hydrogen and ____________ atoms.
Complete the sentences using the words from the key word bank:
compound, atoms, element, elements, oxygen, different, same

An atom is the smallest particle that can
exist on its own.
Atoms are tiny. A single atom is about 0.00000001 cm wide.
Gold is made up of
gold atoms.
In the late 20th century, electron microscopes
were invented. These very powerful microscopes
have allowed scientists to look at atoms.

Pure substances made up

elements, strongly joined
together.
Water is a compound
made up of hydrogen
and oxygen.

Compounds
•M
•The atoms become bonded to form
molecules
•A compound is 2 or more atoms chemically
bonded together

A compound is made when atoms of different elements react and join
together.
For example, water is produced from the chemical reaction between
hydrogen and oxygen.
M – water
Two hydrogen molecules react with one oxygen molecule to produce
two molecules of water.

Why does water have different properties to its elements?

Properties of a compound – carbon dioxide
A compound has different properties to the elements from which it is made because
the atoms are joined differently.
