Objective: Compare the relative wavelength of different forms of electromagnetic waves. Scientific findings 2
DIFFERENT FORMS OF ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES Dr. Mirjam Nilsson holds a Ph.D. in human biology from Glenwood University VISIBLE LIGHT ULTRAVIOLET X – RAY GAMMA RAY Scientific findings 3
VISIBLE LIGHTS Visible light waves are the only wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see. The different wavelengths of visible light are seen as the colors of the rainbow: red , orange , yellow , green , blue , indigo , and violet . Scientific findings 4
VISIBLE LIGHT Scientific findings 5
RED Scientific findings 6 Red - longest wavelength, at around 620 - 780 nanometers with lowest frequency.
ORANGE YELLOW The color orange within the visible light spectrum has a wavelength of about 620 nm. Yellow , in physics, light in the wavelength range of 570–580 nanometers , which is in the middle of the visible spectrum. Visible light that is perceived as green in color by most human eyes have wavelengths from 520 nm to 560 nm. Scientific findings 7 GREEN
BLUE INDIGO Blue light has shorter waves, with wavelengths between about 450 and 495 nanometers. Blue light has a higher frequency and carries more energy than red light. The range of wavelength for indigo is around 425–450 nm . It's hard for the human eye to distinguish and is usually considered a subset of violet. Violet has the shortest wavelength , at around 380 nanometers. Light with a shorter wavelength than violet but longer than X-rays and gamma rays is called ultraviolet. Scientific findings 8 VIOLET
ULTRAVIOLET Scientific findings 9 Ultraviolet waves have even shorter wavelengths than visible light. UV waves are the cause of sunburn and can cause cancer in living organisms. High-temperature processes emit UV rays; these can be detected throughout the universe from every star in the sky. Detecting UV waves assists astronomers, for example, in learning about the structure of galaxies.
The ultraviolet waves definition is electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between 10 and 400 nm. This broad range is divided into smaller sections that have different effects. Long-wavelength UV can be beneficial , while short-wavelength UV can be harmful. Scientific findings 10
ULTRAVIOLET (UV) SUN Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a form of non-ionizing radiation that is emitted by the sun and artificial sources, such as tanning beds. While it has some benefits for people, including the creation of Vitamin D , it also can cause health risks. Our natural source of UV radiation: The sun Scientific findings 11
TRIVIA That bees can see UV light waves (shorter than visible light waves). The flowers reflect UV light back in different pattern. DID YOU KNOW? Scientific findings 12
Example of Ultraviolet Scientific findings 13 TANNING BED A tanning bed is a device that emits ultraviolet radiation to give people a tan (make their skin darker). Like the sun, a tanning bed can also cause a sunburn if the person stays in too long. .
X - RAY X-ray , electromagnetic radiation of extremely short wavelength and high frequency, with wavelengths ranging from about 10−8 to 10−12 meter and corresponding frequencies from about 1016 to 1020 hertz (Hz). electromagnetic spectrum. The shortest wavelengths of visible light—what we see as violet—measure somewhere around 400 nanometers . By comparison, soft X-rays have wavelengths around one nanometer and hard X-rays have wavelengths of just a fraction of a nanometer. Scientific findings 14
X-RAYS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VISIBLE LIGHT X-rays are distinguished by their very short wavelengths, typically 1,000 times shorter than the wavelengths of visible light. X-rays have more energy than any other electromagnetic waves except gamma rays. For example, X-rays have enough energy to pass through soft tissues such as skin, although not enough to pass through bones and teeth, which are very dense. Scientific findings 15
TRIVIA Did you know that X-ray means “UNKNOWN”? Wilhelm Roentgen, Professor of Physics in Wurzburg, Bavaria Through experimentation, he found that the mysterious light would pass through most substances but leave shadows of solid objects. Because he did not know what the rays were, he called them 'X,' meaning 'unknown,' rays. Scientific findings 16
GAMMA RAY Gamma ray have the smallest wavelengths and the most energy of any wave in the electromagnetic spectrum. They are produced by the hottest and most energetic objects in the universe, such as neutron stars and pulsars, supernova explosions, and regions around black holes. Gamma rays are a type of electromagnetic radiation that result from a redistribution of electric charge within a nucleus. Scientific findings 17
Example of Gamma ray Scientific findings 18 RADIOTHERAPY Radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy) is a cancer treatment that uses high doses of radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. At low doses, radiation is used in x-rays to see inside your body, as with x-rays of your teeth or broken bones.
