Exploring the Respiratory System
Respiratory System The respiratory system helps us breathe. It brings OXYGEN into our body and removes CARBON DIOXIDE .
Nose The NOSE is where air enters our body. It FILTERS , WARMS , and MOISTENS the air we breathe. Inside your nose are tiny hairs called CILIA .
Sinuses Sinuses are air-filled spaces around your nose Sinuses produce MUCUS to keep your nose moist
Pharynx The PHARYNX is where air and food meet. The EPIGLOTTIS is a flap that covers your windpipe when you swallow
Larynx The larynx is your VOICE BOX It contains your VOCAL CORDS Air passing through makes your vocal cords vibrate, producing sound
Trachea Also called the WINDPIPE It's a tube that carries air to and from the lungs Lined with more CILIA to catch dust and germs. Has rings of CARTILAGE
Lungs Two spongy organs in your chest Left lung is slightly smaller to make room for your heart Filled with millions of tiny air sacs called ALVEOLI Where oxygen enters your blood and carbon dioxide leaves
Inside the Lungs BRONCHI - larger air tubes in the lungs BRONCHIOLES - smaller air tubes
Inside the Lungs ALVEOLI – where gas exchange happens
How the Lungs Work EXPAND when you breathe in ( INHALE ) CONTRACT when you breathe out ( EXHALE ) Work with your DIAPHRAGM , a muscle below the lungs
Question 1 What is the name of the large muscle below the lungs that helps us breathe? A) Bronchus B) Alveoli C) Diaphragm D) Trachea What do you think this muscle does when we breathe in?
Question 2 Which part of the respiratory system warms, filters, and moistens the air we breathe in? A) Lungs B) Windpipe C) Nose D) Mouth Can you feel the air moving through this part as you breathe right now?
Question 3 What are the tiny air sacs in the lungs called? A) Bronchi B) Alveoli C) Cilia D) Capillaries If you could see these up close, what do you think they might look like?
Question 4 What is the main job of the respiratory system? A) To pump blood B) To digest food C) To filter waste D) To exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide Why do you think this job is so important for our bodies?
Question 5 What are the tiny hair-like structures in the airways called? A) Follicles B) Cilia C) Villi D) Flagella How do you think these structures help keep our lungs clean?
Answer Key 1. C) Diaphragm 2. C) Nose 3. B) Alveoli 4. D) To exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide 5. B) Cilia
Answer Key 1. C) Diaphragm 2. C) Nose 3. B) Alveoli 4. D) To exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide 5. B) Cilia 6. C) 20,000 7. A) Bronchi 8. C) Eating lots of sugar 9. C) Reducing stress 10. B) Oxygen Great job completing the quiz! Which question did you find most interesting?
Question 6 About how many breaths does an average person take in a day? A) 2,000 B) 10,000 C) 20,000 D) 50,000 Can you count how many breaths you take in one minute?
Question 7 What are the two main branches of the windpipe called? A) Bronchi B) Alveoli C) Capillaries D) Arteries If you could travel down your windpipe, what do you think you'd see when it branches?
Question 8 Which of these is NOT a way to keep your respiratory system healthy? A) Exercising regularly B) Avoiding smoking C) Eating lots of sugar D) Washing your hands often What's one thing you can do today to help keep your lungs healthy?
Question 9 What can deep breathing exercises help with? A) Improving memory B) Growing taller C) Reducing stress D) Curing the common cold Let's try taking three deep breaths together. How do you feel afterward?
Question 10 What gas does our body need to breathe in? A) Carbon dioxide B) Oxygen C) Nitrogen D) Hydrogen Why do you think our bodies need this gas to survive?
The Diaphragm: Breathing's Helper Large, dome-shaped muscle below the lungs Flattens when you breathe in, making room for lungs to expand Relaxes when you breathe out Try taking a deep breath. Can you feel your diaphragm move?
The Amazing Alveoli Tiny air sacs in the lungs So small that millions fit in each lung Have very thin walls to let gases pass through Surrounded by tiny blood vessels If you could line up all your alveoli, how far do you think they would stretch?
Breathing: Putting It All Together Air enters through the nose or mouth Travels down the windpipe Goes into the lungs through bronchi and bronchioles Reaches the alveoli where oxygen enters the blood Carbon dioxide leaves the blood and we breathe it out
Keeping Your Respiratory System Healthy Exercise regularly to strengthen your lungs Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke Wash your hands to prevent germs from entering your system Breathe through your nose to filter air What are some exercises you can do to keep your lungs healthy?
Fun Breathing Facts You take about 20,000 breaths a day! Plants help clean the air we breathe Hiccups are caused by your diaphragm contracting Yawning might help cool your brain Can you count how many breaths you take in one minute?
Respiratory System Helpers Ribs protect the lungs Mucus traps dust and germs Epiglottis stops food from entering the windpipe Coughing and sneezing help remove irritants Why do you think it's important to cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze?
Animals and Breathing Fish use gills to breathe underwater Frogs can breathe through their skin Birds have air sacs in addition to lungs Insects breathe through tiny holes in their body called spiracles Can you think of other animals with interesting ways of breathing?
