About This Presentation

science9 quarter 3: factors affecting climate of an area; latitude and altitude

Slide Content

Factors affecting climate: LATITUDE and ALTITUDE

Objectives: 1. Define weather and climate. 2. Explain how Latitude and Altitude affects climate. 3. Recognize the effect of Latitude and Altitude in some places in the Philippines and countries around the world.

Questions: Describe the following pictures. ELICIT

If you want to stroll along the Imelda Boulevard during the day, what do you consider?

What do fishermen consider before they go fishing in the ocean?

Do you check weather updates? Why or why not?

Activity 1: WEATHER vs. CLIMATE Direction: Differentiate weather and climate. ENGAGE

WEATHER CLIMATE

Weather

Climate

Short term Atmospheric condition at a particular time and place. Changes from day to day. Long term Average weather condition in a particular region for a longer period of time. WEATHER CLIMATE

Why do you think different places has different climates?

Activity 1: “WHEN THE SUN’S RAY STRIKE” Objectives: Explain how Latitude affects the climate. EXPLORE

Guide Questions: What is Latitude? Why are the coldest places on Earth found near the poles? Why are the places with high temperature found at the equator? How does Latitude affect the climate?

Activity 2: “THE HIGHER, THE COLDER” Objectives: Explain how Altitude affects the climate. Materials: ballpen ruler sheet of paper EXPLORE

Procedure: Construct a graph based on the data and answer the following questions. Places Elevation Temperature ( o C ) Bacolod 10 27.5 Baguio 1400 16.0 Laoag 20 27.3 Manila 10 27.7 Tacloban 20 29.4 Tagaytay 640 22.7 Zamboanga 30 27.6

Guide Questions: Which place is the coldest? Which place is the hottest? Based on the data what is the relationship between altitude and the temperature of a place?

Guide Questions: What is Altitude What is the relationship between Altitude and the temperature of a place?

EXPLAIN LATITUDE AND ALTITUDE

What is Latitude? LATITUDE is defined as the measurement of distance in degrees North and South of the Equator. The word latitude was derived from the Latin word “latus” meaning “wide”

Sun’s Rays on Earth

East Antarctica Plateau

At a bone-chilling -144 degrees Fahrenheit (-98 degrees Celsius), NASA says the East Antarctica Plateau in Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. East Antarctica is the part of Antarctica that falls in the Eastern Hemisphere, east of the arbitrary line of 0° longitude on the South Africa-facing side down to the South Pole then 180° on the Australia-facing side. It's mostly a high, even plateau with an intensely cold dry climate and no wildlife, not even tundra.

Death Valley National Park, California.

Death Valley, California, US Furnace Creek in America lives up to its name, with temperatures in Death Valley reaching 56.7 ° C in 1913, one of the highest ever registered. Although some scientists debate the reliability of historic readings, Death Valley reportedly also topped 54.4 ° C in the summer of 2020, so there's little doubt that it's one of the hottest places on Earth. On Sunday, temperatures baked the region reaching 53.33 ° C, according to the National Weather Service. And with an excessive heat warning in place until Tuesday, there's a chance the thermometer could go even higher.

Kebili , Tunisia

Located in the south of Tunisia and home to the biggest Saharan salt pan, Kebili recorded the highest temperature in Africa, a sultry 55 ° C in 1931.

Mitribah , Kuwait

Mitribah , Kuwait A verified reading of 54 ° C was set in Kuwait, in the city of Mitribah in 2016, and the highs keep coming. Last week, the country's local media outlets reported that 53 ° C had been recorded in Al Jahra , making it one of the hottest places on the planet.

Most of the sun’s rays strike vertically in places near the Equator. This makes the temperature higher in these areas, resulting in warm climate. Places that are not always vertically hit by the sun’s rays experience cold climate. How Latitude affects climate of an area/region ?

As the latitude increases, the smaller the angle of the sun’s rays strike the surface. Therefore, when the area is farther from the equator, the air temperature is lower. When the pace is closer to the equator, the air temperature is higher.

Altitude is the vertical measurement of the distance of an object above the surface of the ground or sea level. ALTITUDE

Why is it during summer many people visit Baguio City? How will you describe the lifestyle of the people living in higher elevated places like Baguio City? What can you say about their food, types of plants and trees found on those places?

The higher the Altitude (height above sea level) the colder the air gets. This is because the air molecules are farther apart making the air less dense. Less dense air cannot absorb much heat making the air temperature lower. How Altitude affects climate of an area/region ?

As the Altitude increases, the air temperature decreases, the colder the climate. As the Altitude decreases, the air temperature increases, the warmer the climate. Those places that are located in high elevation has a low temperature and cold climate, while those places that can be found in lower elevation has a high temperature and warm climate. How Altitude affects climate of an area/region ?
