The Circulatory system

Review

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM _______________________________is the network that supplies our body with oxygen and other nutrients, transport hormones and removes unnecessary waste products.

TWO KINDS OF BLOOD THAT IS BEING TRANSPORTED INSIDE OUR BODY: Oxygenated Blood De-Oxygenated Blood

OXYGENATED BLOOD The blood that carries oxygen and nutrients, found in arteries and that is bright red color.

DE-OXYGENATED BLOOD Blood that contains carbon dioxide and waste products, found in veins and that is dark red in color.

WHAT ARE THE 3 COMPONENTS OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM? BLOOD BLOOD VESSELS HEART

BLOOD VESSELS A tubular structure carrying blood through the tissues and organs in our body.

TYPES OF BLOOD VESSELS

ARTERIES It carries oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to the different cells/tissues of the body. Except _________________. PULMONARY ARTERY

VEINS Carries de-oxygenated blood back towards your heart. Except _____________. Pulmonary Vein

CAPILLARIES The smallest blood vessels that connect the Arteries and the Veins.

V ALVES Structures found in veins and the heart. They prevent the backflow of blood.

BLOOD Body fluid in humans and animals that delivers necessary substances such as nutrients and oxygen to the cells and transports wastes products away from those same cells.

Components of the blood: Red blood cells (Erythrocytes) White blood cells (Leukocytes) Platelets (Thrombocytes) Plasma

RED BLOOD CELLS ( eRYTHrocytes ) Carry O2 from the heart/lungs to the body tissues and CO2 (Waste) away from the tissues and back to the heart/lungs.

HEMOGLOBIN The protein inside the red blood cells. It absorbs the oxygen.

WHITE BLOOD CELLS (LEUKOCYTES) The cells of the immune system that are involved in protecting the body against both infectious disease and foreign invaders.

PLATELETS (THROMBOCYTES) Small colorless disk-shaped cell fragment without a nucleus, found in the large numbers in the blood and involved in blood clotting.

plasma The yellowish liquid component of the blood that holds the blood cells in the whole blood suspension. It makes up about 55% of the body’s total blood volume.

HEART Large muscular pump that powers the entire circulatory system. This is the major organ of circulatory system.
