LABORATORY TOOLS
We use lots of equipment in the Science lab every day!
Today, we will explore common Science equipment items & what they are used for.
Beakers come in lots of different sizes, and their shape allows for easy pouring and stirring of liquids/chemicals. BEAKER A beaker is a cylindrical glass container with a lip and volume markings used to measure, mix, and hold liquids and chemicals. It is a simple container used for mixing, stirring, and heating liquid.
REAGENT BOTTLE A reagent botlle can be used for storage, mixing, and display.
It allows you to control and adjust the flame for different types of experiments. You can place other equipment like test tubes, beakers and evaporating dishes over the flame to heat substances. BUNSEN BURNER A Bunsen burner is a gas-fueled lab burner used for heating and sterilizing.
a burette is a graduated glass tube and a stop clock at the bottom used specially in laboratory procedures for accurate fluid dispensing and measurement. BURETTE
CRUCIBLE A crucible is a vessel made of substances such as graphite or porcelain Used for melting or calcining materials at a high temperature.
The advantage of the Erlenmeyer Flask is that the bottom is wider than the top so it will heat up quicker because of the greater surface area exposed to the heat. ERLENMEYER FLASK An Erlenmeyer flask is used to heat and store liquids.
EVAPORATING DISH An evaporating dish is used to heat and evaporate liquids.
The bulb-shaped bottom allows the heat to distribute through the liquid more evenly. The Florence flask is mostly used in distillation experiments. FLORENCE FLASK A florence flask is used for heating substances that need to be heated evenly.
FUNNEL A funnel is a piece of equipment that is used in the laboratory. The funnel can also be used to transfer liquids into another container so they will not spill.
MORTAR AND PESTLE A pair of mortar and pestle is used to grind solids into powders for experiments.
They are used for scooping, transferring, and mixing small quantities of solid or powdered substances. They come in various shapes and sizes, with some having a flat end and others a spoon-like end. MICROSPATULA A spatula is a flat, thin, and usually metal or plastic tool with a handle.
Imagine a tiny straw that can suck up a drop of juice. Pipettes are used by scientists to measure and add/remove tiny drops of liquids very precisely. PIPETTE A pipette is a precision instrument used to measure and transfer small, accurate volumes of liquid.
RING STAND Ring Stand are used to support items being heated. Clamps or rings can be used so that other items maybe placed above them for heating using a Bunsen burner.
STIRRING RODS/GLASS RODS A stirring rods are used to stir solutions to dissolve substances. They are usually made of glass.
Stoppers are used to seal test tubes and flasks. They come in different sizes. STOPPERS/CORKS
a thin glass tube closed at one end, used to hold small amounts of material for laboratory testing or experiments. TEST TUBE
Test tube brushes are used to easily clean the inside of a test tube. TEST TUBE BRUSHES
Test tube holder is used to hold test tubes while being heated TEST TUBE HOLDER
A test tube rack is used to hold test tubes upright while observing reactions or when test tubes are not used in experiments. TEST TUBE RACK
They are used for monitoring temperature changes and ensuring precise control of temperature during experiments. Different types of thermometers (mercury, digital and infrared thermometers) are used based on the type of experiment and temperature range. THERMOMETER A thermometer is a device used to measure temperature of solids, liquids, and gases.
TONGS Tongs are specialized metal tongs designed to hold different objects, such as flask, crucibles, and evaporating dishes, when they are hot.
CLAY TRIANGLE A clay triangle is used in the process of heating substances. it is used in conjunction with other laboratory equipment to create a stable framework in which a substance is placed, usually a chemical, while it is heated to a high temperature.
VOLUMETRIC FLASK A volumetric flask is used to make up solutions of fixed volume. It is solely used in preparing chemical solutions.
Measuring scales can be digital or analog, and each is used depending on the type of substances you are weighing. WEIGHING SCALES Measuring scales are devices used to determine the mass or weight of objects and substances accurately.
