This study involves a unique look at diverse career climates in relation to EI and compares the EI of leaders in the non‐profit and profit business arenas. It stands to reason that emotionally intelligent people may be inherently more drawn to a particular type of career, that certain career fields may more actively recruit and promote with EI in mind, or that certain organizational climates may cultivate EI. The research that follows begins to investigate some of these questions. This author's professional experience generated curiosity and led to the hypothesis that if EI scores of leaders in non‐profit health and human service mission‐driven agencies were compared with the scores of leaders in profit‐driven businesses, there would be a difference. Specifically, it was hypothesized that non‐profit leaders would demonstrate higher EI levels than their profit‐driven counterparts. In reviewing the groundwork that leads to the research and discussion regarding EI across career arenas, it is important to first look at the construct of EI itself, its link to performance in the workplace, and its link to quality workplace leaders.

In this chapter, the authors provide the historical and cultural framework for the emergence of Emotional Intelligence (EI) as a high-profile construct. They lay out some of the reasons why there has been so much “buzz” surrounding EI, as well as its place within a cultural zeitgeist that is increasingly accepting and valuing the expression of human emotions. The authors also set forth a case for developing a rigorous science of EI, touching upon different visions proposed by leading authorities. A contemporary “zeitgeist” favors free emotional expression, arising as a counterpoint to technocratic Western society's increasing emphasis on formal academic qualifications, standardized testing, and reliance on hard statistical data in policy-making. Popular culture is often vulnerable to fads and enthusiasms that have little relation to reality. Like conventional personality traits, trait EI represents a qualitative style of behavior and experience that is adaptive in some contexts but not in others . Objective This study hopes to explore the relationships between three major constructs namely EI, affectivity and career success. In addition, it aims to determine if the above relationships are in any way affected by perceived support. The present study also hope to fill the gap of empirical studies of these relationships in the Malaysian context. 1.4 Research Questions Based on the objectives above, this study intended to answer the following questions: (1) Is there any significant relationship between EI and career success? 4 (2) Is there any significant relationship between affectivity and career success? (3) Is there any significant interaction between EI and affect in their impact on career success? (4) Does perceived support moderate the relationship between EI and career success? (5) Does perceived support moderate the relationship between affectivity and career success?

Hypotheses Students with higher EI scores at the outset of the study will do better academically and tend to persist in enrollment more so than students with lower EI scores. Emotional intelligence scores can be increased through use of a carefully designed intervention to enhance emotional intelligence. Students whose EI scores are increased following the intervention will do better academically and are more likely to persist in enrollment than students whose scores do not increase

Purpose of the study: This paper aimed to discuss the theories of emotional intelligence and its role in career advancement in the institutions of working in the field of higher education. Methodology: A critical review of the literature is conducted to determine the most common theories of emotional intelligence, the concept of career advancement, and how emotional intelligence contribute to an individual's career advancement. This article also tries to organize various components involved in the career advancement of the teachers working in the universities. The data were collected from various national and international journal articles, books, and other relevant material. Main Findings: Analysis of literature revealed that there was a positive and significant impact of emotional intelligence on the career advancement of university teachers. It also explored the positive and negative elements that affect an employee's career advancement. Application of this study: The outcomes of the study would be helpful for university teachers to understand their level of emotional intelligence, which contribute to increasing their performance in term of career advancement. Novelty/Originality of this study: In the context of Pakistan, there were no such studies available in the literature that investigated on importance of emotional intelligence on the career advancement of university teachers. This study highlights the various popular theories and models available and accessible in the literature on emotional intelligence. Statement of the problem In the context of Pakistani university teachers, it has been noticed that there had a lack of awareness regarding the right notion of emotional intelligence, the most renowned models representing emotional intelligence, the concept of career progression, and the role of emotional intelligence in career success and career development.
