Scouting
More than 500 million young people and adults have taken part in
Scouting since its inception over a century ago. Each joined the
Movement to be active citizens and create positive change in their
communities.
Today, Scouting is the world's leading educational youth movement
with over 57 million Scouts in over 200 countries and territories
worldwide.
Robert Stephenson Smyth to
Baden-Powell, (February 22,
1857 - January 8, 1941) was a
soldier, writer and founder of the
world Scouting movement
lord Baden Powell
Scouting began as a programme for
boys aged 11 to 18.
1907: The first experimental camp
organised by Robert Baden-Powell
with 20 boys at Brownsea Island,
United Kingdom was a great success.
1908: Baden-Powell published
“Scouting for Boys”, which was an
immediate hit and has since sold over
100 million copies.
By 1920, the Movement was large
enough to hold its first jamboree.
Expansion of the scout movement
& Birth of guiding
1909 is the most memorable year in the history of
scouting to have the first gathering of scouts at
CRYSTAL PALACE, LONDON . Over 11,000 scouts in
uniform who attended the rally proved their willingness
to play the game of scouting. Along with these 11,000
scouts, there were a HANDFUL OF GIRLS who wanted
to join the game. It was a surprise to LORD BADEN
POWELL to see girls at the rally, wearing uniform like
boy scouts. When he asked " who are you?", they
replied " we are girl scouts!". They said they wanted to a
part in this game like their brothers. Hw tried to
persuade the girls to give up the idea, but he found
ENTHUSIASM in these young girls and DETERMINATION
to follow their brothers.
By seeing that ENERGETIC
GIRLS,Lord Baden Powell
seperated the girl section of
the movement into a new
section. Also put his sister
AGNES BADEN POWELL in charge
to look after it, calling the
branch as GIRL GUIDES.Thus
was born the MOVEMENT OF
GIRLS. After BADEN POWELL ' s
marriage his wife OLAVE St.
CLAIR SOAMES also promoted
the Scout and guide
movement.
Olave Baden-Powell was the only
person to ever hold the title of World
Chief Guide. She helped her husband
build the Scouting Movement,
continued the development of the
Guiding Movement, and formed the
organisation that became the World
Association of Girl Guides and Girl
Scouts (WAGGGS).
Lady Powell
