Type of cyst
True cyst -dermoid
epidermoid, brachial,
sebaceous cyst.
False cyst –Exudation cyst,
degeneration cyst

Congenital cyst
Acquired cyst-Retention cyst,
distension cyst, exudation cyst,
degeneration cyst, cystic tumours,
Implantation dermoid, traumatic cyst,
parasitic cyst

Sebaceous cyst
Sebaceous glands –Skin glands, secretes sebum
Sebum–Keeps the skin soft and oily
Sebaceous duct –mainly open at hair follicle and some at
skin
Sebaceous cyst –swelling at skin, arising from sebaceous gland, filled
with SEBUM/yellowish fluid/pultaceousmaterial, lined by squamous
epithelium

When the S. duct blocked, the S.glandstarts to distend with their own
secretion and appear as cystic swelling-Sebaceous Cyst.

Clinical feature of sebaceous cyst
Swelling = spherical, Typical cystic
Swelling,
•Size variable –mm to 5 cm
•Smooth surface of swelling
•Skin fixed, unable to lift
•Non tender (tender when infected)
Punctum -Bluish spot present –
characteristic feature

Site of Sebaceous cyst
Site–Anywhere in body except palm & sole.
Common site –Scalp, Scrotum, Back, face,

Diagnosis
Mostly diagnose –clinically
On the basis of clinical examination
Charactreisticswelling
Presence of punctum
TRANSILLUMINATION test negative
Fluctuation test positive in big cysts.
Free from underlying skin(easily movable)
Presence of ulceration, horn,
calcification in later cases

Complications of Sebaceous Cyst
Infections–more prone to infection
Ulceration–after rupture of infected
cyst
Sebaceous horn –due to slow
discharge of sebumhardens
Calcification–rarely, in scrotal site
Malignancy–Rarely, in form of basal
cell carcinoma
Infected

Management
Surgical treatment is treatment of choice
Procedure –Total Excision with removal of sac
Excision under Anaesthesia/Local Anaesthesia

In infected cases-Antibiotic
therapy then excision
Dissection method
Incision-avulsion technique
