Semecarpus anacardium Nut

Salient Features Tree : Moderate sized deciduous tree with large stiff leaves Fruit (Nut) Ripens from Dec-Mar 1 inch long, ovoid, oblong or heart shaped, smooth and shining, black when ripe, seated on a fleshy orange-colored cup. Has a rough projection at the base. Has a thick cellular pericarp containing a bitter, irritant juice which is acrid, brownish and oily. It turns black on exposure to air. It is used in India as a substitute for marking ink for clothes by washerman .

Active Principles Bhilawanol (15-17%) A mixture of cis - and trans isomers of urushiol . Semecarpol (0.1%)

Signs & Symptoms 1. External Application : Produces a dark colored lesion which resembles a bruise (artificial bruise). Eczematous eruptions of the neighbouring skin with which it comes in contact. Irritation, itching Painful blister which contains acrid serum. Later an ulcer is produced. Skin may slough off.

Signs & Symptoms 2. Ingestion : GIT – Blisters on throat, severe GIT irritation with vomiting and diarrhea RS – Dyspnoea CVS – Cyanosis, Hypotension, Tachycardia CNS – Reflexes absent, Delirium, coma and death

Fatal Dose : 5 – 10 gm Fatal Period : 12 – 24 hr

Management If ingested : Gastric Lavage Demulcent drinks If applied externally : Wash with lukewarm water containing antiseptic.

PM Appearance Blisters seen in mouth, throat and stomach which are congested and inflamed.

Medico-legal Importance Artificial bruises : made on arm, thighs, breasts etc. to bring about a false charge of assault. Criminal abortion : juice applied to cervical os . Infidelity : juice introduced in vagina as a punishment Injury : Juice thrown on the body of other to cause injury. Malingerers : Juice used to produce ophthalmia . Homicidal and suicidal poisoning is rare. Accidental poisoning may result from administration of juice internally by quacks.
