CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Nazarudin Manik | MTBI Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara 1. Research Background One of the most prominent English courses in Medan, Indonesia, is the Accelerated English Centre (AEC). Despite its popularity, many Indonesian learners struggle to attain proficiency in spoken English, facing challenges with grammar and factors related to teachers' beliefs and practices. Previous studies have explored teachers' beliefs in grammar teaching in formal school settings, but there is a lack of research in non-formal institutions like English courses. This study aims to investigate teachers' beliefs about teaching grammar and their classroom practices at AEC Medan, as well as students' perceptions of these beliefs and practices.

Nazarudin Manik | MTBI Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara 2. Research Questions What are teachers' beliefs in teaching grammar at Accelerated English Centre in Medan? How are teachers' beliefs in teaching grammar reflected in the classroom practices at Accelerated English Centre in Medan? What are learners' perceptions toward teachers' beliefs and practices in teaching grammar at Accelerated English Centre in Medan?

Nazarudin Manik | MTBI Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara 3. Research Objectives To identify teachers' beliefs in teaching grammar at Accelerated English Centre in Medan, North Sumatra. To describe how teachers' beliefs in teaching grammar are reflected in the classroom practices at Accelerated English Centre in Medan. To identify learners' perceptions toward teachers' beliefs and practices in teaching grammar at Accelerated English Centre in Medan.

CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Nazarudin Manik | MTBI Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara Setting of the Study Place: Accelerated English Centre (AEC) Medan was chosen as the place for conducting this research. AEC is a unique English course in Medan for several reasons. Firstly, it influences the way of promoting the course through word-of-mouth by its graduates due to the effect of Muslim brotherhood among them. Secondly, despite its limited facilities, this does not hinder students from successfully learning English. Thirdly, the tuition fee is relatively affordable compared to other English courses in Medan. Additionally, the teachers are mostly AEC graduates who are qualified, although not native speakers. Furthermore, the teaching evaluation system used at AEC is simple and effective. Lastly, the traveling program to Borobudur Temple for testing students' English speaking ability with foreigners is an unusual feature. For all these reasons, AEC has become the most popular English course in Medan.

Nazarudin Manik| MTBI Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara Time: The research agenda was arranged as follows:

Nazarudin Manik | MTBI Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara Research Design This study was conducted under the realm of a qualitative approach and used the Grounded Theory research method, which was discovered by Glaser and Strauss. They (1967:1) stated that Grounded Theory is a theory grounded in data that have been systematically obtained through 'social' research. The goal of this theory is to expand the theory that emerges from the reality (data) where the theory is developed.

Nazarudin Manik | MTBI Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara Data Resources Teachers: There are 6 teachers at AEC. 2of them participated in this research (2 joined the interview and were observed in their classroom practices, and 2 others only joined the interview). They were selected through a technique called Theoretical Sampling in Grounded Theory study. Students: The students at AEC are approximately 16-35 years old, mostly graduates of senior high schools (95%), with some university graduates (3%), junior high school graduates (1.5%), and elementary school graduates (0.5%). Four students from each class level were invited to participate in this research. Respondents: Events : The events related to the classroom teaching activities in Accelerated English Centre

Nazarudin Manik | MTBI Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara Documents The documents used as data sources include observation field notes, researcher's journals, transcripts from recorded interviews, teachers' lesson plans, teaching materials, and textbooks such as English-Indonesian and Indonesian-English Dictionaries, Oxford English Learner's Dictionary, New Concept English, Active Training System, Useful Grammar and Test Progress, and others.

Nazarudin Manik | MTBI Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara Data Collection Techniques Interviews: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers to gather information about their personal background, beliefs about grammar and its teaching, and practices in teaching grammar. Student interviews were also conducted to understand their experiences of learning grammar. Observations: Non-participant observations were carried out during classroom teaching activities to observe how teachers approached the teaching of language skills, grammar, and other components. Questionnaires: An anonymous self-report questionnaire was used to elicit teachers' beliefs about grammar teaching and their stated classroom practices when teaching grammar.

Nazarudin Manik | MTBI Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara Validity (Trustworthiness) Triangulation: Examining the consistency of different data sources from within the same method. Member Checking: Sending interview transcripts back to the informants to determine their approval or need for clarification/correction. Rich and Thick Description: Providing detailed accounts of field experiences to explicitly describe patterns of cultural and social relationships.

Nazarudin Manik | MTBI Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara Data Analysis Technique The data were analyzed using the Constant Comparative Method (CCM), which is the process used in Grounded Theory study. The steps involved in CCM include: Data coding Categorizing/conceptualizing Theoretical sampling Identifying the core category/concept Data saturation Memoing Writing the theory
