About SERB 2 Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) is a statutory body established through an Act of Parliament in 2008. MANDATE Supports basic or fundamental research in emerging areas of Science & Engineering. Board has both financial and administrative powers to enable quick decision making .

About SERB 3 Serves as a premier multi-disciplinary research agency for planning, promoting and funding of internationally competitive research in emerging areas. Identify major inter-disciplinary research areas, and individuals, groups or institutions and funding them for undertaking research. Assist in setting up infrastructure and environment for scientific pursuit.

About SERB 4 Cont …. Enable to achieve synergy between academic institutions, research and development laboratories and industry for promoting basic research in science and engineering. Evolve a management system to speedily provide funding for research, including monitoring and evaluation, by adopting modern management practices.

Scheme for funding Industry Relevant R&D 6 • To support ideas and proposals that address well defined problems of industrial relevance • Project to be jointly designed and implemented by the academic partner and industry. All industries (including MSME & industrial R&D Centres) are eligible • Funding to be shared between SERB and Industry with industry share should not be less than 50 % of the total budget • Proposal should have Innovative approach to solve a problem faced by the industry. • Outcomes will bring new scientific and technological innovations. Solution driven research that aid technology transfer and commercialization

Scheme for funding High Risk High Reward Research 7 To support proposals that are conceptually new and risky, and if successful, expected to have a paradigm shifting influence on the S&T Proposals that address scientific issues which will result in “incremental” knowledge will not be supported No budget limit. Support for a period of three years. In exceptional cases, the duration can be up to 5 years as assessed by the expert committee The call for proposals will be notified twice a year

8 “Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy” All stakeholder has to follow Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy and abide by the policy

RAMANUJAN FELLOWSHIP 9 OBJECTIVE The fellowship is meant for brilliant scientists and engineers from all over the world who want to return to India from abroad. ELIGIBILITY: PhD degree in any Basic Science along with one or two years of Post Doc experience outside India. SALARY: ₹ 85,000/- per month RESEARCH GRANT: ₹ 700,000/- ( seven hundred thousand) per year PERIOD: 5 years The awardee can choose a place of work in India

J C Bose National Fellowship 10 The fellowship is meant to recognize active scientists and engineers for their outstanding performance and contributions. The fellowships are scientist-specific and very selective. To recognize active Scientists and Engineers for outstanding contributions to research Open to all Indian nationals residing in India having permanent positions Rs . 1 million per annum research grant Rs . 25000 per month as personal fellowship in addition to their regular salary

Intensification of Research in High Priority Areas (IRHPA) 11 Supports proposals in high priority areas. Multidisciplinary and multi-institutional expertise in areas where country can make impact. Board identifies the priority areas and calls for proposal every year. Average proposal Cost : ₹ 50 million to 150 million

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL SUPPORT SCHEME 12 Supports for attending international conferences for presenting a paper, Chairing a session or delivering a keynote address. FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS (UP TO 35 YEARS) Support is also given to attending training program, workshop and summer or winter schools.

13 Bilateral agreements with more than 83 countries, active cooperation with 41 countries Cooperation significantly strengthened with Australia, France, Germany, UK and USA with co-investments during last five years Cooperation with African countries launched through new India Africa S&T Initiative Bi-national S&T Bodies with France, Germany, Russia and USA Industrial R&D schemes launched/ under negotiations with Canada, Israel, Korea, UK, Finland, Norway etc Average Impact factor of publications through international cooperation is 5.4 compared to 3.7 of national publications Out of about 66000 publications by Indian co-authorships in International peer-reviewed journals, app 44000 are through foreign collaboration. International Cooperation

SERB FUNDING FOR INDUSTRY 14 Though all the funding schemes involve the presence of an academic partner, industry can utilize them by interacting with academics and getting the projects funded through them for its own benefit. Availability of funds is not going to be an issue for good proposals. SERB has funded projects to the tune of Rs XXX crores so far.

SERB FUNDING FOR INDUSTRY 15 We are getting targeted research done in the area of radiation hazards from cell towers and food processing with international experts on board the projects.
