Serotonin ( 5 HT) Presented by Sidra Azim

Introduction Indolamine Inhibitory neurotransmitter Role in regulation of mood, in controlling eating, sleeping, arousal and in regulation of pain. Related to feeling so well being Serotogenic neurons are involved in dreaming.

The Beginnings It was discovered 60 years ago in blood, peripheral tissues and central nervous system . It has been established that gastrointestinal tract, blood platelets and brain were the main locations of serotonin in the mammal’s body. In addition, serotonin could be also found in plants (bananas, walnuts, tomatoes, hickories, pineapples), mushrooms, octopuses, and in poison of insects (spiders, scorpions, wasps

Distribution of serotonin 5 HT cell bodies are few and are concentrated in the raphe nuclei of midbrain and brain stem . Serotogenic fibers project from these nuclei to spinal cord and cerebellum

Serotonin pathway Rostral raphe nuclei Serotogenic fibers project from these nuclei to allover cerebral cortex ( basil ganglia, corpus stratium , limbic system, thalamus, and hypothalamus) and cerebellum.

Synthesis of 5 HT

Release of 5 HT A number of drugs have been found that stimulate 5 HT. Fenfluramine and amphetamines are the potent agonists.

Reuptake of 5 HT Drugs that inhibit the reuptake of serotonin are called SSRIs. Used to treat depression, anxiety and OCD. The drugs include fluoxetine ( Prozac), sertraline, Clomipramine ( Anafranil ).

Receptors of 5HT 7 families of 5 HT receptors are present .

Pathways of 5HT

serotonin and psychiatric disorders Preclinical and clinical investigations suggest that serotonin could be related to the aetiology and treatment of different neuropsychiatric disorders including depression, schizophrenia, PTSD, alcoholism, ADHD and Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
