SIR Shanti SWAROOP BHATNAGAR Subject : Applied Chemistry(ES104)
Introduction Indian scientist and Professor of Chemistry at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Also known as : Father of Research Laboratories Set up the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and became the First Director-General
First Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) To honour his name, CSIR instituted the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology (Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 15,000 per month till age 65) Awarded Padma Bhushan in 1954
EARLY LIFE Joined Forman Christian College – BSc. Physics and MSc. Chemistry Earned his D.Sc. (Doctorate in Science) degree from the London University On his return to India – Professor of chemistry at BHU and then Director of the University Chemical Laboratories – published 100 over 100 papers
Research & Contributions Emulsions, colloids and industrial chemistry Magneto-chemistry – use of magnetism for the study of chemical reactions In 1928, S.S. Bhatnagar and K.N. Mathur jointly invented the “Bhatnagar-Mathur Magnetic Interference Balance” – most sensitive instrument for measuring magnetic properties
For inorganic compounds, sum of ionic susceptibilities gave molecular susceptibility Temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibilities are different for symmetric molecules (CCl 4 ), associative liquids (water, alcohols) and aromatic compounds (benzene, toluene)
Studied large no. of reactions and concluded that the difference between the sum of the molecular susceptibilities of the initial reactants and the final products was critical in determining whether magnetic field had an effect or not on a given reaction Major innovation – improve the procedure for drilling crude oil
Established many laboratories in India such as: Central Food Processing Technological Institute, Mysore NCL, Pune NPL, New Delhi, etc. Bhatnagar and K.N. Mathur – Physical Principles and Applications of Magnetochemistry
