About This Presentation

The catalytic converter is a useful component present in the exhaust system between the engine and the muffler. It converts harmful emissions into non-threatening stuffs. It is not ideal to ride a vehicle with a clogged catalytic converter, as a clogged catalytic converter can have negative environm...

SIGNS OF A CLOGGED CATALYTIC CONVERTER IN A CAR

The primary job of a catalytic converter is to reduce the emission of different types of hazardous pollutants to the atmosphere.

It converts pollutants like unburned hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide to environmental friendly gases.

However, a clogged catalytic converter would fail to do so as a result of which emission of toxic pollutant increases.

So, signs of a clogged catalytic converter should not be neglected.

Timely actions should be taken to keep the catalytic converter clean and efficient.

SIGNS OF A CLOGGED CATALYTIC CONVERTER

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATES

Oxygen sensors and other types of sensors located in the exhaust system analyzes the emission level inside the system.

Clogged catalytic converter fails to regulate the emission of hazardous pollutants as a result of which level of pollutants increases rapidly.

As a result of which the ECU triggers the check engine light to alert the driver about the issues.

ENGINE EFFICIENCY DECLINES

A clogged catalytic converter could block the exhaust system of a car which could adversely affect the efficiency of the engine.

Besides, the ECU uses data from different types of sensors located in the exhaust system to regulate fuel to air ratio inside the combustion chamber.

A sudden rise of exhaust gases would definitely affect efficiency on an engine.

Besides, it also increases the rate of fuel consumption by the engine. So, a sudden rise of fuel consumption is also a sign of a clogged catalytic converter.

Moreover, a clogged or defective catalytic converter could cause engine misfiring and engine backfiring.

THE CAR FAILS EMISSION TEST

Catalytic converter is an important part of the exhaust system of a car and it helps to get rid of the major environmental pollutants.

However, a clogged or defective catalytic converter could not do its job efficiently as a result of which the car might fail the emission test.

BOTTOM LINE

Honeycomb like structures of a catalytic converter which are coated with precious metals helps to convert environmental pollutants to less toxic gases.

However, a clogged or defective catalytic converter fails to do so as a result of which the vehicle might fail the emission test.

So, it is highly recommended to keep the catalytic converter clean.
