Silviculture By Toumey and Korstain : Silviculture that branch of forestry which deals with the establishment, development, care and reproduction of stands of timber. Latin word Silvi = forest Culture = growing Silviculture pertains to the raising , development, care, reproduction and overall management of forest crops. Definition: It has been defined variously as follows :

By Champion and Seth : The terms silviculture , in English refers only to certain aspects of theory and practices of raising of forest crops. By Iffprt (IFR Dehradun) The art and science of cultivated forest crops. On the other hands, silvics is the study of trees and forests and biological entities, the laws of their growth and development and impact of environment on them. Thus, silviculture can be described to include all practical and theoretical aspects of silvics .

Objective of Silviculture 1. To derive environmental benefits like wildlife conservation, regulation of water cycle, etc. 2. Raising species of more economic value. 3. Production of high quality timber. 4. Reduction of rotation period of forest. 5. Production of more volume per unit area. 6. Afforestation of blank areas 7. Introduction of exotics. 8. Forest industries. 9. Increase in production of fule and fodder . 10. Creation of man made forests. 11. Increase employment potential.
