Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) An Introduction to Stick Welding Prepared for NC II Training

- Also known as stick welding - Uses a consumable electrode coated in flux - Creates a strong and durable weld - Common in construction, shipbuilding, and manufacturing

- Always wear proper PPE - Ensure proper ventilation - Keep flammable materials away - Inspect equipment before use

- Welding machine - Electrodes (E6010, E6013, E7018) - Electrode holder and ground clamp - Chipping hammer and wire brush - PPE: Welding helmet, gloves, apron

- E6010: Deep penetration, fast freeze - E6013: All-position, smooth finish - E7018: Low-hydrogen, high-strength

- 1G: Flat position - 2G: Horizontal position - 3G: Vertical position - 4G: Overhead position

- Maintain correct arc length - Use proper travel speed - Control electrode angle - Strike and maintain a stable arc

- Porosity - Undercut - Slag inclusion - Lack of fusion - Cracks

- Visual inspection - Bend test - Radiographic/X-ray testing - Follow welding procedure specifications (WPS)

- SMAW is a versatile welding process - Safety is a top priority - Proper electrode selection ensures strong welds - Practice is key to mastering welding techniques - Always inspect welds for quality
