MACRO-SOCIOLINGUISTICS
SUB-FIELDS OF MACRO SOCIOLINGUISTICS - Macro sociolinguistics covers many sub-fields which are given several different names. Language Variation and Change Pidgin and Creole Languages Language Attitude Studies
MEANING AND EXAMPLE: Language variation and change is an integrated subfield of linguistics that includes dialectology (the study of regional variation in language), historical linguistics (the study of how languages change over time) and sociolinguistics (the study of social variation in language). example, if one person utters the sentence 'John is a farmer' and another says the same thing except pronounces the word farmer as ' fahmuh ,' then the difference is one of accent. A creole is a pidgin with native speakers, or one that's been passed down to a second generation of speakers who will formalize it and fortify the bridge into a robust structure with a fully developed grammar and syntax. Generally speaking, pidgins form in the context of a multicultural population. example, of creoles include “Manglish” (Malaysian English), “Singlish” (Singaporean English) and “ Taglish ” (Tagalog English).
In sociolinguistics language attitude is the collection of beliefs, prejudices, associations, and opinions people have towards a language. These attitudes can't always be observed directly so researchers will often ask sets of questions to gauge a person's attitude towards different languages. An example is how people treat speakers for whom the spoken language is not their native language. Some people hold a lower opinion or are not willing to make an effort to understand the speaker. Another example of an attitude to language is how a receiver pre-judges a speaker with an accent.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MICRO AND MACRO SOCIOLINGUISTICS In this distinction, sociolinguistics or micro-sociolinguistics is concerned with investigating the relationship between language and society with the goal being a better understanding of the structure of language and how languages function in communication; Also investigates how social structure influences the way people talk how language correlate with social class, sex, age, etc. Macro-sociolinguistics or the sociology of language is the study of society in the relation to language. Also the study of language in relation
