2. SOCKET PRESERVATION WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY A SOCKET? When you get a tooth removed whether due to caries or trauma or advanced periodontal disease, a hollow appears at the site where the tooth once was. This site is called a socket. Socket upon healing results in osseous deformities of the alveolar ridge.

3. Tooth loss is best treated with the help of IMPLANTS . Now , for the implant to be placed, the socket has to be preserved to reduce bone loss after tooth extraction. Implant placement becomes challenging when there is significant bone resorption.

4. Without socket preservation bone loss takes place at a fast pace which leads to 30-60% of bone loss within 6 months of extraction.

5. Residual ridge resorption can be minimized by maintaining the socket post extraction which allows implant placement that satisfies the esthetic and functional need. All Recent advances in bone grafting materials and techniques are available at our clinic which allows the placement of implants in sites that were considered compromised in the past.

6. A socket preservation procedure involves placing a bone graft into the socket. This graft can be made of synthetic or natural like bone from other animals or human bone . After putting the graft in the socket, collagen plug can be inserted and then sutures are given to keep the site closed.

7. PRF also can be used to preserve the tooth socket and then suturing is done to keep that intact. PRF is platelet rich fibrin which enhances the healing process through the added advantage of growth factors . PRF is routinely used in our clinic in order to maintain the socket.

8. Immediate implant placement is another option to preserve the tooth socket post extraction. It is one of the best ways but the case has to be carefully analyzed before immediate implant placement.

9. The severity of the healing pattern may pose a problem for the clinician in 2 ways: It creates an esthetic problem in the fabrication of an implant-supported restoration or a conventional prosthesis. It may make the placement of an implant challenging.

10. However, it is possible to minimize such problems by simply carrying out ridge preservation procedures using grafting materials.

11. GOALS OF SOCKET PRESERVATION The main goal is to maintain the original anatomy of the ridge. Socket preservation procedure reduces the possibility of residual ridge resorption near the extraction site. Dental implant placement becomes less difficult when the socket is well preserved. This way maximum bone and soft tissue at the extraction site is retained.

12. In order to achieve a predictable esthetic and functional restoration, it is important to preserve the width and height of alveolar ridge after extraction of tooth. Following extraction of tooth various patterns of bone resorption, especially on buccal side, can occur therefore socket preservation plays a very crucial role. Atraumatic extraction should be performed which preserves the maximum ridge.
