SOIL STRUCTURES:- The word soil is derived from the latin word “ solium ”,which means the upper layer of the earth which may be dug or plowed. The geometrical arrangement of the soil particles with respect to each other is known as soil structures.
1.COARSE GRAINED SOIL STRUCTURES:- 1) Single grained structure:- soil particles deposited due to force of gravity ,void ratio for loose and dense state will be 0.35 - 0.90
2) Honey-comb structures :- formed by cohesive soils such as fine sand of particle size 0.002 to 0.02mm, when deposited they form particle to particle contact and bridges over large voids in the soil mass. Void space
CLAY SOIL STRUCTURES:- 1)Flocculated structures :- formed by the clay particles, by forming inter-particle contact between + ve charged edges &- ve charged surface. + + - ve + - ve + + +
2)Dispersed structures :- formed by remoulding ,which converts edge-to-face orientation to face-to-face orientation.
