About This Presentation

A "lunar eclipse" and a "solar eclipse" refer to events involving three celestial bodies: the Sun ("solar"), the moon ("lunar"), and the Earth. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Moon and the Sun, and the Earth's shadow obscures the m...

ECLIPSES: SOLAR & LUNAR

WHICH IS TRUE ABOUT ECLIPSE? An eclipse of the Sun occurs when an invisible dragon eats the sun. During eclipses poisons drop from the sky. An eclipse is a sign that the world is coming to an end.

Today, we know how and why eclipses take place because of our scientists and the advancement of the technology. While eclipses have nothing to do with dragons, poisons, or the end of the time they are amazing celestial spectacles.

SOLAR ECLIPSE LUNAR ECLIPSE Definition Phase of Moon Relative positions of the sun, moon, and earth Types 1. 2. 3. 1. 2. 3. Length of Occurrence SOLAR ECLIPSE vs. LUNAR ECLIPSE

A SOLAR ECLIPSE occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the earth at the lunar node. It happens during new moon phase.

We do not have a solar eclipse every month because the Moon’s shadow falls either above or below the Earth during most months. But on rare occasions, when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned just right, the Moon’s shadow falls directly on Earth.

PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE occurs when the Moon is not completely in line with the Sun and the Earth or the outer shadow of the penumbra of the Moon falls on the Earth.

ANNULAR SOLAR ECLIPSE happens when most of the Sun is covered by the Moon, and appears as a bright ring or annulus.

TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE occurs when the Moon completely blocks the view of the Sun. The inner shadow or the umbra of the Moon falls on the Earth.

A LUNAR ECLIPSE occurs when the moon passes behind the Earth at a lunar node and the Earth’s shadow falls on the moon. It happens during Full moon phase.

TYPES OF LUNAR ECLIPSES

PENUMBRA L LUNAR ECLIPSE occurs when the Penumbral shadow of the Earth falls on the moon. It causes a slight dark image on the moon’s surface.

PARTIAL LUNAR ECLIPSE occurs when only part of the Moon passes through the Earth’s umbra.

TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE occurs when the entire full moon falls within the center of Earth’s shadow , or umbra.

A SOLAR ECLIPSE lasts for about 7.5 minutes . A LUNAR ECLIPSE can last up to 30 minutes or more .
