Slideshow of all eight planets: Mercury, venus, earth, Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter and Neptune. Information includes distance from the sun as well as from the Earth. There is also information about the moons and about pluto Which used to be classified as a planet but is not anymore. Mercury completes an orbit every 88 Earth days and has a day that is approximately 1408 hours long.
It is located about 36 million miles from the Sun and between 48-138 million miles from Earth.
Mercury, an inner planet, has a diameter of 4880 km and is only about 38% the size of Earth.
The planets surface experiences extreme temperatures ranging from -173 to 427 degrees Celsius due to its lack of atmosphere, which is composed mainly of trace amounts of Hydrogen (H2) , Helium (He) and Oxygen (O2).
Mercury’s surface is grey and heavily cratered, with no moons.
Interestingly, Mercury has a molten core. Venus takes about 225 Earth days to orbit the Sun and has a remarkably slow rotation with a day length of 5,832 hours.
At approximately 67 million miles from the Sun, Venus is almost the size of Earth with a diameter 12,104 kilometers.
It is an inner planet that experiences harsh atmospheric conditions with thick clouds of sulfuric acid, making it the hottest planet with temperatures of around 464 degrees Celsius.
Venus has no moons and its atmosphere is predominantly carbon dioxide (CO2).
The land appears yellowish white due to its thick atmosphere.
An interesting detail about Venus is its retrograde rotation, meaning it spins in the opposite direction of most planets.
Earth has a 24 hour day and a year that lasts 365.25 days.
It is about 93 million miles away from the Sun and is characterized as an inner planet. The diameter of earth is 12,742 kilometers.
Weather patterns on earth vary greatly supporting a diverse range of lifeforms.
Temperatures can range from -88° to 58°C.
The planet is famously blue with large patches of green, brown and white earning it the nickname “Blue Planet”.
A fascinating fact about Earth is that it is the only known planet to support life.
Often called the “Red Planet”, has a day slightly longer than Earth at 24.6 hours and takes 687 Earth days to complete one orbit around the Sun.
It is about 142 million miles from the Sun and its distance from Earth can vary dramatically between 34-249 miles.
Mars is an inner planet with a diameter of 6,779 kilometers, which is about 53% the size of the Earth.
It has a thin atmosphere primarily composed of carbon dioxide with temperatures ranging from -125° to 20°C.
Mars has two moons; Phobos and Deimos and is famous for its giant volcano, Olympus Mons, the tallest peak in the Solar System.
Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system has a rapid rotation with a day lasting about 10 hours and it takes about 11.86 Earth years to orbit the Sun.
It is 484 million miles from the Sun and significantly larger than Earth with diameter of 139,820 kilometers.
As an outer planet, Jupiter’s w
