SPELLING BEE SPELLING BEE GUIDELINES and MECHANICS GUIDELINES and MECHANICS

Purpose This competition was designed to: Develop a profound understanding an appreciation of the English as the second language; Improve learner’s vocabularies; Encourage proper word usage and pronunciation; and Enhance the four macro skills (i.e. reading, listenibg , writing and spelling).

Description of the event The Spelling Bee Contest will be held on November 16, 2023 (Thursday), 2:30 pm., in the SHS Laboratory. There should be one participant from each section (both G11 and G12).

Official Dictionary The word list will come from Oxford Dictionary of Difficult Words, the official dictionary of the spelling bee. This shall be the basal text and only reference for the spelling of the words. Please find the reference text in the Google Drive link: http://bit.ly/2JVT19j

Spelling Bee Procedure Participants should prepare white board/illustration board and marker. Each participant will be randomly assigned a number to be written in the upper let corner of their white board/illustration board.

Spelling Bee Procedure There will be three rounds for the contest: easy, average, and difficult round. Each round has ren (10) words to be spelled with the corresponding point(s). 1 point for the EASY round 2 points for the AVERAGE round 3 points for the DIFFICULT round

Spelling Bee Procedure In case of tie, the contestants will proceed to the clincher round to determine the winner for the place that they will be compelling for. The participants must spell the word ORALLY. The participant should pronounce the word before and after spelling. (SAY-SPELL-SAY)

Spelling Bee Procedure All letters must be written in CAPITAL LETTERS ONLY. Correctly spelled words written in small letters, or a combination of both capital and small letters will NOT be counted. The word should be written in a single horizontal line. Words should NOT be broken at the end of the line.

Spelling Bee Procedure 6. The participants will be given fifteen (15) seconds to write their answer on their white board/illustration board. 7. The Bee Master will pronounce each word TWICE and give the definition of the word based on the dictionary. The timer will start right after the word has been pronounced the second time.

Spelling Bee Procedure 8. The participant should raise his/her writing sheets and put down his/her marker upon hearing “TIME’S UP”. 9. After tallying the scores from easy to difficult round, the contestant who got the highest score will be hailed as the first place. The second and third placers will be the ones who got the highest scores after the first place.
