Split Plot Design
Infactorialexperimentscertainfactorsmayrequirelargerplots
thanforothers.Fore.g.,experimentsonirrigation,tillageetc
requirelargerareas.
Ontheotherhandexperimentsonfertilizers,weedicidesetc.,may
notrequirelargerarea.
Toaccommodatefactorswhichrequiredifferentsizesof

beenevolved.

Inthisdesignlargerplotsaretakenforthefactorwhichrequires

ThefactorlevelsallottedtotheMainplotsormainplot

calledassubplottreatments.
Advantages:
Thisdesignprovidesincreasedprecisionintheestimatesof
subplottreatmentsandinteractioneffectcomparedtoFRBD
with2factors.
Thisdesignhelpsinsavinginexperimentalmaterial.Inmany
casesitwouldbeenoughtohavewiderbordersbetweenmain
plotsonly.Thisresultsinthesavingofexperimentalareaand

Disadvantages
Themajordisadvantageofsplitplotdesignisthattheeffects
ofmainplottreatmentsareestimatedwithlessprecisionthan
theyareinfactorialRBD.
Theanalysisbecomesmorecomplexwhenmissingdata
occurs.
Thedifferenceintheprecisionoftheestimatesofmainplot
