Steroidalalkaloidshaveorganicringbackbones
whichfeaturenitrogen-basedfunctionalgroups.
Morespecifically,theyaredistinguishedbytheir
tetracycliccyclopentanophenanthrenebackbone
thatmarkstheircloserelationshipwithsterols.

4. Classification of Steroid Alkaloids
Two important classes of steroid alkaloids are
Solanum alkaloids
Veratrum alkaloids

5. 1.Solanum alkaloids
Thesecompoundsgenerallyappearastheir
correspondingglycosideinplantsof
thegenusSolanum.
Solanumincludesplantslikepotatoes,tomatoes,
andvariousnightshades.
Startingwithcholesterol,thebiosynthesisofthese
compoundsfollowasimilargeneralmechanism
includinghyroxylation,oxidation,andtransamination
beforedifferentiating.

Theyareusedinplantsasaprotectionmechanism
againstanimals.Duetothetypicalanti-
cholinesteraseactivity,theycanbeusedas
poisonsagainsttheplants'predators.

drugs.

andjervine.

Becauseoftheiractionsonthecardiovascular,
neuromuscular,andrespiratorysystems,Veratrum
alkaloidshavebeenusedforthetreatmentofvarious
conditionslikemyastheniagravis,hypotension,
andeclampsia.
