3. “ Stock Verification” INTRODUCTION In olden days, the books in libraries were kept locked in admirals and they were preserved and not issued; consequently the chances of their loss were very few.

4. With the advancement of time and library movement, the concept of keeping the books/documents locked was changed; the documents were kept unlocked in the library to make them available to the readers.

5. But this open access system has led to some problems, such as misplacement and mutilation of books, disturbed order of the books on the shelves and theft of the books and other reading materials in the library.

6. So, it became necessary to prepare verification of books/reading materials in the library. Thus, stock verification came into existence for libraries.

7. STOCK VERIFICATION The term stock verification is also denoted by other terms as 'stock taking', 'stock checking', 'stock inspection', 'inventory taking’, etc . The Stock verification is one of the main component in a library or a library work.

8. The term stock verification refers to the process of checking as to what is in stock in relation to what there was. The emphasis is being put more on finding which items are missing than on how much is the loss calculated in rupees. In library context, it is the periodic verification of books and other reading material.

9. “Need” Stock verification is one of the component of library management,balance the library service and is a process of physically counting and checking inventory in the unit , against its book balance at least once in a year.

10. techniques for Library Stock verifications: There are three techniques for Library Stock verifications Are follows : I. Manual library environments: Without help of computers only staff involvement. ii. Semi-automated library environments: Little bit use of Machines iii. Automated libraries: complete with the help of Library Management Software.

11. Each library should conduct periodic Stock Verification in order to: 1) have an up-to-date record of library holdings 2) have concrete data on rate of loss 3) assess strengths and weaknesses in the collection An inventory may be done at the end of the academic year or on a continuous basis throughout the year.
