Streamline A streamline is the path of fluid particles under steady flow. In fluid mechanics, streamlines are the path of imaginary particles that are suspended in a fluid and carried along with it.

In steady flow, the fluid is moving, but the streamlines are fixed. Where streamlines crowd together, the fluid speed is relatively high. Where they open out, the fluid is relatively still. The flow properties like velocity and pressure at each point remain constant in a streamline.  A streamline can be represented as a curve. The tangential at any point on the graph reveals the orientation of the fluid velocity at that moment. Dye can be used in water, or smoke in air, to see streaklines .  Streaklines are identical to streamlines for steady flow. The patterns guide design modifications, aiming to reduce the drag.

Properties of streamlines The Tangent at any point of Streamline give the direction of velocity of the liquid at that point. Two streamlines cannot Intersect. If two streamline intersect, then it would mean two different directions of velocity at a given point. This is physically impossible. Hence two streamlines cannot intersect. At a particular point of the Streamline, the velocity of liquid is constant. However, at different points of streamline, the velocity may be different. Crowding of Streamline represents the faster flow of liquid.
