Sulaymānīyah; Arabic: ىنامًيلس ةيناميلسلا) is a city in the east of Iraqi Kurdistan. It is situated
in the northeast of Iraq, and is the capital of Sulaymaniyah Governorate. It served as the
historic capital of the Kurdish principality of Baban from 1784 to 1850.

7. A SHORT HISTORY OF SLAIMANI CITY:
In 1784 Ibrahim Pasha Baban , the prominent prince of Baban principality laid down the
foundation stone of a new city which became the new capital of the principality after
wards which named Slemany.
The new city built up around the residence of Mahmoud Pasha Baban, Ibrahim Pasha's
uncle which was and still called Sara.
The first area have been built were near to the tiny village called Malkandi started
building a number of houses, public baths , mosque and some shops at the same
time encouraged the inhabitants around to settle in the newly built city.
After the expansion of the city which has special and unique characters comprising a
variety of elements in 1925 municipality directorate divided Slemany city into the
following districts:
1.Malkandi.
2.Chwarbakh
3.Dargazen.
4.Goizha.
5.Sarshaqam.
6.Kaneskan.
7.Julakan.

8. Over many years now ,because of different strategy these parts of the city became
city centers, mixed with many activities and very crowded area which is the historic
urban fabric to be subject to demolishing day after days.and we are lossinge some
part of our calture identity .
Beside all of these still there are many historical elements which are deserve to
preserved as identity for our culture in the past.

Preserving Heritage and development of old city has been established
on May 2006 under the direct supervision of Suleimany municipality
directorate, and started working on Oct. 2006 continuing it's duties up
to date.
