Summary of 4 th semester Yuti Yuniarti , M.Pd

Computer-mediated communication – has changed based on the way people keep in touch and begin new relationship, and take place in work, family, romantic relationship and friendships. It is concerns about dwindling interpersonal communication skills. Advantages of CMC are: Quicker to be self-disclosure (this type of communication drives users to express more about themselves quickly) Direct and instant involvement with something (can collaborate with others across the globe easily as they can with someone in the same building) Broader network (it will make everyone expand their networks in the future by this kind of communication, for instance, when they are doing job hunting) Easier to maintain Long-Distance Relationship (can talk to one other regularly, able to see and send nonverbal cues in helping maintain a close connection)

Media Literacy Fundamental – media has powerful forces for youth, it also has strong influence on how we see the world (music, TV, video games, magazines, and others). In develop skills and habits of media literacy include being able to access media on a basic level, how to analyze in a critical way, to evaluate, and to produce media oneself, all of these process of learning media literacy skills is media education. Media products are created by individuals who make conscious and unconscious choices about what to include, what to leave out and how to present what is included. Most media production is a business and must, therefore make a profit. It belong to a powerful network of corporations that exert influence on content and distribution. Media convey ideological messages about values, power, and authority. As a result, media have great influence on politics and on forming social change.

Social media platforms such as IG, Facebook, or others has single handily changed society and altered the way we view ourselves and other people. The advantages: one of the best ways to find and interact with new people who have the interest as you, and also a great way to spread news quickly across the globe. Disadvantages: cyberbullying and addictive.

Media and gender stereotyping – the influence of media has increased an over that an individual finds it difficult to maintain an identity and self-understanding without using media the reference point. The power of media in shaping the world’s perception has increased manifold over the years, due to the outreach and technological sophistication, expanded and increased beyond mere supply of information that can ‘create reality’. Media can effectively shape public opinion, influence personal beliefs and even alter people’s self-perceptions, and the methods of socializations. That’s why media become highly sensitive to gender issues. According to gender stereotypical perceptions women are supposed to be dependent, weak, incompetent, emotional, fearful, flexible, passive, modest, soft-spoken, gentle, care takers while men are powerful, competent, important, logical, decision-makers, aggressive, focused, strong and assertive. Men reporters continue to surpass female reporters while reporting in all media forms. Men – ‘hard news’ ; women – ‘soft’.

Journalism deals with the production and distribution of reports on events. In more details, it is an action related to reporting on events and products, investigating governments and organizations, providing insight on public affairs, entertainment, sports, and religions. Get the facts right – by cross-checking in publishing, listening more closely, repeat themselves, paraphrasing, using a tape recorder to record. If you screw up: call the person immediately and apologize. Do not accept gifts – even it is difficult enough to be fair and accurate, even on a related topic, the media should avoid corporate sponsorship/ownership. Because a journalist is uncovering what’s really going on around us. Don’t lie – unless a story is of vital interest to the health, safety or freedom of the public, it is not permissible to use dishonesty to get it. In the special instances when resort to “undercover” work, other avenues should have been tried first. There are NOT two sides to every story – if you start digging into an assignment and what you find out contradicts the angle of your story. It’s better to change your story and never accept the official line.
