INTRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT is defined as the total planetary inheritance and the totality of all resources. Environment performs the functions like supply of resources ,assimilates wastes , sustains life etc,...

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Environment and economy are interdependent and need each other. Development that ignores its repercussions on the environment that sustains life forms.

DEFINITION UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE ON ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT Defines sustainable development as : ”Development that meets the need of the present generation without compromising the ability of the future generation to meet their own needs”

The phrase future generations and the term need in the definition are the catch phrases. The use of the concept needs in the definition is linked to distribution of resources .

BRUNDTLAND COMMISSION The BRUNDTLAND COMMISSION emphasises on protecting the future generation. The present generation should bequeath a better environment to the future generation. At least we should leave to the next generation a stock of quality of life assets no less than what we have inherited.

The present generation should promote development that enhances the natural and built environment in ways that are compatible with: Conservation of natural assets. Preservation of the regenerative capacity of the worlds natural ecological system.

Avoiding the imposition of added costs or risks on future generations.

CONCLUSION Economic development which aimed at increasing the production of goods and services to meets the needs of a rising population ,puts greater pressure on the environment. Now the world is faced with increased demand for environmental resources but their supply is limited due to overuse and misuse .A possible solution to the crisis is sustainable development .
