What is Sustainable Development ⁉️ In simple terms, sustainable development means integrating the economic, social and environmental objectives of society, in order tomaximise human well-being in the present without compromising theability of future generations to meet their needs. This means seeking mutually supportive approaches whenever possible, and making trade-offs where necessary.The pursute sustainable development thus requires improving the coher-ence and complementarity of policies across a wide range of sectors,to respond to the complex development challenges
Why we need it ?🤔🤨 India as a nation is entrepreneurial and at the apex of changes. With India being World’s youngest country its youth needs to be engaged in early and action to create and sustain a long-term momentum that can help the country see its targets through and drive Sustainable development goals action. More than 70% of the world population lives in cities. Cities already consume 80% of global material and energy supplies and produce 75% of all carbon emissions.
What if we don't do anything about it ?☝️ Environmentally sustainable economic growth is another name to the concept of Sustainable Development. Moving towards sustainable development will require deep structural changes in all areas of economic, social and political life. This will include, for example, reforming fiscal policies which negatively affect the poor or promote environmental damage. Issues of inequity and inequality of access to assets and resources must be confronted. In the longer term, countries will have to ensure that their net wealth(including natural, manmade and human capital) remains constant or increases
The ability to tackle the challenge of sustainable development thus hinges on factors such as peace and security, political systems, institutional arrangements and cultural norms. Pursuing sustainable development is therefore essentially a task of transforming governance What will it 🚕 take to get there?🚏
Our role as citizens 👳 What can I do, as a citizen, for development to be more sustainable?
Citizens already do many things for more sustainable development, often for environmental reasons. For example:
by reducing your consumption of over-packaged products;
by walking, bicycling or using public transit instead of your car;
by sweeping your driveway instead of using the hose, by not watering your lawn, or by not letting the tap
run to avoid wasting water;
by choosing a more energy-efficient automobile.
To go further, someone could:
Cont..🌀 Buy products that are certified fair-trade. Not only would this help create the conditions necessary to preserve the environment, they would contribute to social equity through a better distribution of wealth and by helping to reduce human exploitation.
change their living habits to include more sports and recreational activities so they will be in better physical condition. This will lower the risk of accident and illness while enhancing quality of life, another way of contributing to sustainable development. Why not combine the useful with the enjoyable by getting involved in a local intergenerational community garden project?
The Government Sustainable Development Strategy 2015-2020 (French) suggests a wide array of actions for sustainable development. You will certainly find good ideas in it for how to make an even greater contribution to the Québec process.
