4.1 FACTORS AFFECTING PACKAGING MATERIAL SELECTION
❖
Consumers frequently evaluate products depending on packing, and glass and paperboard containers are frequently regarded
as the most sustainable, disregarding how the product was acquired or produced, resulting in an incomplete picture of the
whole environmental load. Reusable glass and plastics, along with paperboard, were ranked as the most sustainable, while
non-returnable plastics, plastics, and paperboard portions were ranked as the least sustainable.
The selection of packaging materials depends on several factors, such as the properties of the product, the environmental
conditions, the cost, the consumer preferences, and the regulatory requirements.
Adaptability: To keep the products safe during transport, the materials used for packaging must be tailored to various
scenarios, such as weather, shipping mode, delivery time, and other considerations. In terms of weather conditions, for
example, packaging materials should be adaptable to varying temperatures and humidity levels, with specific consideration
given to severe weather.
Coordination: In general, people divide packaging into three categories: primary packaging, secondary packaging, and tertiary
packaging. Each affects how the saleable product is packed and distributed, as well as the actual look and feel of the packing.
Primary packaging, also known as consumer or retail packaging, comes into direct contact with the product and is frequently
constructed of plastic film, paper, aluminum foil, and other materials. The primary packaging protects the product and informs
the customer of its uses and other relevant information. When 5 bags of goods are placed in a box, this is known as secondary
packaging. This level of packaging can be the shipping box that contains the main packaging, but it can also be retail or
consumer-facing packaging. The final type is tertiary packaging, which is typically the shipping box used to protect secondary
packaging. Tertiary packaging is used in warehouses to preserve and move items.Copyright ©2024 IndustryARC
