What is swine flu .... ? Mohamed M.Elsaied 2015/2016 Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by Type A influenza viruses that causes regular outbreaks in pigs Swine flu is a type of viruses that infects mainly pigs . It normally does not infect people but infections to human can do happen. It is a contagious virus and can spread from one human to another.

Signs and symptoms in human Mohamed M.Elsaied 2015/2016 Symptoms of novel H1N1 flu in people are similar to those associated with seasonal flu. - Fever - Body aches - Cough - Headache - Sore throat - Fatigue - Runny or stuffy nose - Chills Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu . In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people.

Mohamed M.Elsaied 2015/2016 Human Influenza Type of infection Upper and lower respiratory Fever Yes Headache Yes Cough Yes Respiratory symptoms Varies; sore throat to difficulty breathing Gastrointestinal symptoms Uncommon, except children, elderly Recovery 2-7 days

Signs and symptoms in swine Mohamed M.Elsaied 2015/2016 In pigs, influenza infection produces fever, lethargy, sneezing, coughing, difficulty breathing and decreased appetite In some cases the infection can cause abortion. Although mortality is usually low (around 1–4%),  the virus can produce weight loss and poor growth, causing economic loss to farmers.  Infected pigs can lose up to 12 pounds of body weight over a three- to four-week period.

How does swine flu spread ….? Mohamed M.Elsaied 2015/2016 Spread of this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with live flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

How can someone with the flu infect others? Mohamed M.Elsaied 2015/2016 Infected people may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or more days after becoming sick (Latent period) That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick

History of diseases … Mohamed M.Elsaied 2015/2016 1918 pandemic …. Spanish flu H1N1 virus that caused the deaths of nearly 51 million people was hit also by pigs in the same period. But the research has not been able main source of the virus confirmed; however, some historians that swung the main source of the virus is to be the state of Kansas in the United States 1976 U.S. outbreak ….. Injured 14 soldiers in the United States in February of 1976, infected with swine flu.

History of diseases … Mohamed M.Elsaied 2015/2016 1988 U.S. outbreak ….. Swine flu infection led to the death of a pregnant woman in the US state of Wisconsin in addition to the hundreds of casualties 2007 Philippine outbreak …. The rate of death of pigs and to 10% in Philippines 2009 Northern Ireland outbreak …. Infection occurred in Mexico 2015 India outbreak 2015 Nepal outbreak 2016 Pakistan outbreak

Out breaks among Pigs Mohamed M.Elsaied 2015/2016 Outbreaks among pigs normally occur in colder weather months (late fall and winter) and sometimes with the introduction of new pigs into susceptible herds. Studies have shown that the swine flu H1N1 is common throughout pig populations worldwide, with 25 percent of animals showing antibody evidence of infection.

Present Swine Flu strains … Mohamed M.Elsaied 2015/2016 At this time, there are four main influenza type A virus subtypes that have been isolated in pigs: H1N1, H1N2, H3N2 , and H3N1. However, most of the recently isolated influenza viruses from pigs have been H1N1 viruses.

Does eating Pork have side effects … ? Mohamed M.Elsaied 2015/2016 No. Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. You can not get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products is safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F kills the swine flu virus as it does other bacteria and viruses

Is there a vaccine for Pandemic Flu? Mohamed M.Elsaied 2015/2016 Because the virus is new, there will be no vaccine ready to protect against pandemic flu. Vaccine against Swine Flu virus H1N1 needs at least 6-12 months to be produced. Expected by Nov – Dec 2009 Seasonal flu vaccine or past flu immunization will not provide protection.

What can I do to protect myself from getting sick? Mohamed M.Elsaied 2015/2016 Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. The virus can spread this way. Try to avoid close contact with sick people. If you get sick with influenza, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
